Don't stop at 1982 though. Some of the Zincolns in higher grades are gonna be a better set down the road...IMHO of course!

I have seen posts of different people keeping from US coins: every pre-1982 cent, any LWC, most roll searchers pull all silver coins, I saw one keeping rolls of Jefferson nickels. There are about as many different people that stockpile as there are different coins.

Quote: i was having a hard time trying to explain what I was asking Maybe you meant do we hoard coins to later make money by selling them at a profit? I have maybe $100 into uncirculated rolls of same date nickels from the last decade. I did it just to go through them at some point and pick out a few MS67 MS68 and MS69 ( if I'm lucky ) coins maybe and have not messed with them yet. I am backed up in trying to work on other coin projects at the moment. One thing I wish I had done was when I finally saw 2009 P and D nickels hit a number that I was willing to pay, (and they were crazy) I bought a roll of each. My timing was pretty good. Those nickels leveled at around $20 a roll from starting out at way over $100 and they stayed low for awhile. I wish I would have bought maybe 6 rolls of the P mints at the low price because they went back up a lot since I bought them. At the time when they were at the lowest tho, I said they were still crazy high. Oh well? It's still a mystery where the bulk of those minted in 2009 are all at? Either they are in speculators/investor hands or still being stored in some Federal Reserve vault. I dunno? They don't get found very often though. I think everyone likes to grab some newly minted coins in some quantity when they first come out, we really don't know what the situation might be right away. I also know of a few collectors who try to put together one full roll of every coin in a series and this way they have a roll set.

Sleepy,
I think the responses may have been somewhat reluctant because I don't think anyome who does have a stockpile wants to advertise it. That's like a big neon sign hanging on their front door: "Rob me - not him!"
There are lots of people who hoard copper pennies as a form of bullion. Likewise, there are many forum members who stock up on precious metals.
I am not a hoarder myself mostly because it's not my style and I don't feel like locking up so much currency. 10,000 pennies is still $100. I think I would rather use that as daily spend money or, even better, add something unique to my collection.

I know wheezy! I missed the boat on the 2009 Nickels! In fact they are the only ones missing from my rollsearch set (oh the 1950 D too) BTW. If you find any of those MS79's I'd love one!

I have a plastic container of dated rolls that I have yet to go through. Mostly pennies and I'm guessing around 100 rolls. The same goes for a few rolls in each other denomination. Also have some uncirculated (all the same year) rolls from the bank.

I'm okay answering this one. Seems like a legitimate question. I have a "stash" consisting of wheat cents and nickels. As I searched rolls and bulk lots of these coins putting my sets together, I kept all the wheats and pre-1980 nickels (including buffalo and liberty) and either rolled them or filed them in a box (in 2x2's). Why? Because my 3 y/o granddaughter loves to "help" me with my collection. I've talked about this before, she's actually pretty good about it. If she develops a real interest in collecting when she gets older and understands what we're doing, she has enough stuff to look through to work on her own sets. If she doesn't, oh well; this costs me nothing to store, I was buying the bulk lots anyway, and I can always break even if I sell.
BTW- I too, have a jar for pocket change. When it fills (old gallon pickle jar) I roll it and put it in my account. This is "mad money", used to buy the toys and stuff I want.

I managed to pull half a dozen 2009 nickels and I'm certainly keeping any I come across. I am also keeping the common date wheaties I find.

I have about 50 rolls of 1943 wheats ranging from G to MS63 I like good looking steel pennies. I don't never take anything back to the bank because every time I look threw some of them I find things that I missed. Now I am afraid I will let something go that was interesting or worth something. Is this a hoarder coin collecting disease? LOL Thanks Big Ed

I agree with James Wesley Rawles of Survival blog fame about the future melt value of nickels. I buy them a roll or two at a time for face value from my credit union, and I recently passed the 60 roll level.

I guess I am a collector by definition. I have accumulated some nice coins over the years. 99% of the coins I have are silver or gold and Bullion. I don't mind sharing what I have accumulated because it is all in a lock box at my bank. I never store PM's or completed coin sets in my safe at home, they are taken directly to the lock box when done. This serves two different purposes: 1) they are safe(pardon the pun) there and 2) I can't impulsively just grab a couple rolls of 90% when I want some money and cash them in. The safe also holds my weapons and ammunition, jewelry and important documents.
Besides, the house has a video surveillance system, Alarm, Bruno and strategically placed hand guns for my families protection. I am a realist/survivalist as well I guess.
