I didn't think polishing had anything to do with the distance of the AM. I think it has to due with the use of a proof die vs. a business strike die.

It was told to me on this very forum that polishing along the edges of the letters on the die made them appear as if they were getting closer together, or further away. I cannot remember.

Seal, you are not incorrect in your statement. Polishing can make letters seem further away from each other. The the case of the CAM's and WAM's the distance is first and foremost due to the difference in die used.

I do not know anything as to the variable distances in this variety but if anyone does please post so that we all may learn.

It was coppercoins that shared with me about the varying distances from coin to coin was from polishing. The topic is too old for me to find. I wish I could so all could see. At first I was skeptical of the response, but as I have looked at well over 500 92D cents I do see how the polishing would affect the coin in this manner.

The reason polishing makes the letters appear farther apart is that the letters are actually thicker at the base (near the field of the coin) because they are slightly tapered, when they polish them, they actually get thinner, therefore look farther apart.

These AM's are killing me. I try so hard to find one that my mind plays tricks on me sometimes and I think the letters are further or closer than they may be.

I finally broke down and bought a loop and a magnifying glass.

fur-coin-talk...once you learn the location of the initials FG, it becomes much easier than just depending on the AM.

seal006, glad I explained it so it was understandable...it's tough without pictures

There are only two die types here- Wide AM and Close AM. The gap can vary slightly due to die polishing but that does not create any more varieties. Also, the AM distance is not the only pick up point(PUP). The positioning the of designer initials should always be used to confirm each variety- do not solely rely on the AM.

I put the 92D aside in case I wanted to take a second look again. If it appears debatable I will post some pics. Thanks everyone.
