A tabletop will not hold a dSLR with a macro lens. Even if it can, you won't be able to get the camera high enough to shoot down on the coin, and trying to do this with the camera horizontal will be an exercise in frustration.

So when I go to BestBuy I just need to make sure I can get one that tilts straight down right?

*Any* full-size tripod should be able to point straight down, but check to be sure.

The one I found says "3 way pan." So I assume that's Up/Down/Left and right?

Here's a follow up question. What is the "remote" that you connect to the camera when its attached to the tripod called? So I can take pictures without actually having to touch the camera. I feel like this would only help with stability.

remote shutter release I think. I made one from a hands free device also from Walmart. It was a mono hands free device made by body glove and was like 4 bucks if I remember correctly and came with the adapter to make the 3.5mm jack fit in the jack that fits in the camera (not sure of the size but probably like 2.5mm)

So I just need to pick up the shutter and whatever sized adapter I need for the camera. Seems simple enough.

You have a Canon dSLR. The software that came with the camera will allow you to run the whole show from your computer, using a USB connection from the camera. No need for a remote shutter release.

Well isn't that a handy piece of info. Guess I'll buy a small USB cable then.

One should have come with the camera. It's micro-USB at one end, normal-sized at the other.

It very well could have and probably did. I'll ask my wife about it. Thanks Dave.

I use the remote shutter when I am out in the field and not around a computer so for 4 bucks it was worth it to me. I also can take pictures anywhere in the house and doesn't have to be near the computer without shaking the camera and without using the timer. I also like you can aim the camera outside and just hold the button down for continuous shooting
