This is a Grease Filled Die which is neither damage nor an error.

What Coppercoins sez.
I have seen Struck Through Grease coins erroneously called "error" on ebay.

Just read this from Lincolncentresource.com and it says that a struck through error can range from staples to grease or to any object found at the mint. Lincolncentresource.com are authorities in this field.

I misunderstood coppercoins. I stand corrected. Thanks for clearing it up!

If it's neither an error or damage, is it then a variety?

Minor die obstructions are common and considered to be normal. A major obstruction would be considered an error as would a coin struck through an object such as scrap or another planchet.

Can you really say it's common when people are willing, and do, pay a premium for them?

Commonality is proven simply by roll searching, give me a box of coins and I could find you a couple dozen Struck Through Grease to some degree.

Is it a major enough obstruction to be considered an error when whole words are missing along with a couple stars?

As has been said before, coins struck through a little grease are not considered collectible errors.

The authority has spoken his side. I wish authorities from the other website, the Lincolncentresource would also share their Two Cents to further clear doubts that struck through little grease coins are not "considered collectible errors".

It looks like someone scratched it out. I see this frequently in my pocket change.
