Homemade dot?

Ahhh, how about this. While I'm not a stickler for using the word "retarded" in a joking sense, it's not being used in that context here as far as I can tell. So, without giving you some "time off" for the comment at this time(which I should not see again), I will ask you to just elaborate with pictures if you like where the dot is so everyone can learn from your experience with spotting these. It looks like there is some question. Not knowing these coins at all, it would be nice for me to learn as well, so please share with us.

I too would not pay that much to find out. For the 1947 dot variety, the dot was caused by a deteriorating die. Thus, it should not look as sharp as the one shown in the picture but without a better picture, I can not say for sure. There are also those 4 marks to the right that can easily be the tips of the maple leaf, and if they are, then it maybe the result of a plugged die, thus a different variety ... or homemade.

Danlos9551, it would have been wiser to have provided a better picture and the reasons for it to be a dot variety instead of calling people "retarded" and loosing the respect of others!

1. "dot was caused by a deteriorating die". - That's a discredited theory. Many experts believe the dot was intentional.

2. "would have been wiser to have provided a better picture" - I will as soon as my USB microscope arrives.

3. "homemade" - if you have a method of creating perfect raised dots on the surface of a coin to fool TPGs, I'd like to see you show it. "Homemade dots" are about as real as UFOs.

4. "loosing the respect of others" - lol, English isn't my first language either, so no comment :).

My experience with grading companies is that if the variety is not exactly the same as what's published in the coin books its not the variety, and that dot is not the same as the coin books(Charlton 2011 65th edition) page 151.

Just for the sake of argument,

You've indicated in point 1 that "the dot was intentional" but in point 3 you write "perfect raised dots", can you clarify, dot or dots?

Here's the best I could resolve from the ebay picture; the detail pic is from Charest's book.

For those of you who are apt to believe that homemade dots are about as real as UFOs let me explain something to you.
During my tenor (now retired) as a full time coin dealer I was privy to a wide range of homemade error coins the like of which will nock your socks off, One in particular springs to mind is the 1936 dot penny
The coin was shown to me and asked my advise, while in perfect condition I of course had my doubts which were later confirmed when the subject was placed under extreme magnification and I found that some unknown person had with a minute drill made a hole through the obverse until it almost appeared on the reverse design, making a perfect dot in the right place and then filled the obverse with copper, the effect was to say the least brilliant and had me fooled for a while.
Dont get me started on the 1948 dollar..
And I take umbridge at being call retarded.

1. If it's a discredited "theory", then why would many experts only "believe" it was added on purpose. It should be factual at that point if the intent was to discredit something else right?

2. Looking forward to the pictures, thank you.

3. There are a lot of things that people can do to coins that would fool the TPG's, including adding or removing metal. My guess is the only reason they get caught is because they are trying to create/modify a rarity. If the folks that are good at manipulating coins were to focus on medium value coins instead of the high priced ones, they would probably get a lot through the system. Just a guess.

4. English is my first and only language. I believe the poster was just trying to give you friendly advice as was I. Critique my English and laugh if you will, but make it good because it will be a parting shot if the attitude doesn't change.

Posts are "addressed" to all who read, ask questions, or just lurk here - as all readers, questioners, and lurkers here read them. This is not a private conversation.

Take care how (all of) your words come across.

I have been following this thread, and looking at DVCollectors pics it looks like to me, that the 'dot' is a maple leaf that has been distorted somehow.

I would like to see the OP's close up picture so it would give us a better look.

That dot appears to match the reference photo from Charest.
