Does CoinStar sound like a reasonable way to handle this? There's one right across the street from me. And this way I could keep 4-5 rolls of shiny 2011's.

Celtic: You could sell the box on ebay - at a small premium. You could take maybe 10 rolls to save and return the rest to the bank - or - if you want to get super hard core on it - you could look at each and every cent in the box hoping for a true gem (like MS65 or higher). I've tried it both ways. The shield cents are so poorly struck, and with the corrosion/stain/air bubbles issues - a real gem is a long shot. I'd grab 10 rolls choosing rolls that have good end coins, and return the rest. Best, LastGold

Thanks, LastGold. I'll probably take that route. But return where? CoinStar? Bank? My bank (BoA) doesn't take rolled coins, so I'd have to break the rolls and put them in a deposit bag. I guess not a big deal now that I think about it. I guess breaking all the rolls would allow me to do a cursory check for die errors and such too. I did notice some end coins with red streaks on them, but that could be from the ink on the paper rolls. And I don't think I want to sell on ebay. Too much of a pain for little gain. Thanks for the suggestions though. ~ CK

Ok, regardless of what I do with that first box of zinc, I picked up another at the bank today. This box had 50 little holes in the top to verify that there were indeed 50 rolls of pennies in there, and I saw some new and old pennies on the ends of the rolls. So this one is off to a better start already.

Ok, so I cracked 20 of 50 rolls last night, and I think y'all are pretty close with your guesses. I haven't taken any official counts yet, but have been divvying up into piles of years/mints for easier counting later.
Interesting finds so far: 1970-S and a 1953.
Copper hits seems to be hovering right under 20% Found some nice lightly-circulated and nicely patinated early (non-wheatie) coppers that will make good additions to a folder/album.
Highest hits are 2010 and a majority are D, as you predicted, LastGold. However, as the age of the coins increases, the distribution of D and P becomes more balanced. The coppers are nearly 50-50. I suppose that's to be expected as the coins distribute more evenly over the years.
Will get pictures of some of the interesting coins later and post.
Thanks for your input.

Ok, here we go, first bit of data from the (second) box of pennies:
396 copper / 2.5k total = 15.84% BLUESZONE, you are the closest at 17%
5 Wheaties ('24, '44D, '50D, '53D, '56D)s pecksynder, you were right on!
1 oddity, a '92 Canadian cent Again, BLUESZONE called it
Vast majority of the were D-mint, as LastGold predicted they would be.
Also of interest, I got 3 S mint marks ('70 x2, '74)
I ended up with some nice cents from '67-'82 that will make good candidates for the collection. I have a breakdown of all the copper cents by year/mint and when I my eyes uncross, I'll tally up the Zincolns as well and report back.
I also picked up another box of cents today from the bank, as well as a box of nickels and a box of dimes. I don't think I'll get as granular with the next box of cents but probably will with the nickels and dimes for the first go-around.
Now I need to dump 2000+ cents that I'm not interested in. Is there a limit at CoinStar?

There is another thread to post your finds from cent rolls/boxes... you might get more feedback there.

Thanks, merclover. I will summarize and cross-post there as well.
Why oh, why did I start buying boxes? I walked out of the bank today with $375 in coins. That's after I dropped a pile of cash on the Mount Hood puck this morning. What's the matter with me?!
At least I will be returning the vast majority of the coins I bought today... :)

For me it feels really weird to buy coins...even though you are buying nothing.
I keep most of my money in cash format. Even though the coins are liquid, they don't feel as liquid as the money clip in the dresser drawer

Yeah, felt weird to me too, walking out with boxes of metal, when in years past (before I was a collector), it was the other way around (me bringing tons of change to the bank).
And you're right - 50 (100, 150, 200...) rolls of pennies aren't exactly liquid. The danger is hoarding the silly things and not getting them back to the bank before inflation depreciates the face value of your metal.

Celtic-Did you find any nice 83-90s cents? Those are hard to find in great condition and would be a good addition to the collection IMO. I found a gem of a 83 in my last box...

I have yet to do a whole box. I have done 13 rolls still have 3 more to go though till I'm out I have gotten 30% copper and 3 wheats, but the bank always makes sure to give me older looking rolls. have actually found a lot of MS 60-80's

Wow, I must live in a pretty good area. A typical box for me goes something like: 1768 zinc, 700 copper, 9 wheats, 8 canadian, and 15 2009's. I keep all 2009's since they are pretty scarce here. I don't think I've ever gotten less than 25% copper (except for those 4 boxes of 2011's that Chase just stuck me with).
