Wow. Great find.
Don't think I could break it out of that holder though.

Thanks for the feedback and no, don't plan taking it out of the holder. As SD says it has its own cachet/history. Will post a pic when she arrives.

Well, that's the thing. If it doesn't make 65, you leave it in the Redfield holder and make your money back that way. If it does make 65, you immediately quadruple your money by cracking it.

That's what I love about this place, I learn something new every day. I'd never heard of the Redfield collection before.

Quote: Don't quite get that one SD. Wouldn't it carry a higher premium if left in the Redfield? Not at 65, it won't. 1890-S jumps in value bigtime between 64-65, a jump which makes knowledgeable collectors want to see the respected TPG plastic rather than Paramount. Would you have bid this coin to 65 prices based on the pics shown? Would you have considered it more seriously if it were in PCGS plastic?

OK I see what you're saying about the other collectors wanting that TPG slab. But honestly speaking just for myself, I'm not sure I would have bid on it in a normal slab. I was really interested more in that Redfield holder with a NICE coin inside. Actually I'd just joined ANA with a mind to having NGC grade it (along with my other Redfield) as I found out NGC will keep it in the orig. holder.

On the other hand, looks like you may be right. Here's the same coin/mint/seller with a Redfield slabbed by PCGS going for a goooodly amount more AND it's a grade lower.

Now that's just silly. It's a $200 coin in MS64. The "Redfield" cachet is an interesting sideline, not a 3x multiplier of value. Redfield was a hoard, not a collection. And, at over 400,000 coins, not a small one.
Eliasberg is a provenance I'd pay for. Redfield, not so much.

Here she is right outta the chute. Think it makes 65? I'd put it at a 64+.

I like the toning! The coin does look like a 64 or a 64+ but I doubt that it would make 65. Just a little too much chatter in the fields and the cheek.

yeah if it werent for that mark on the cheek it may make 65 but they seem to get more strict once you get over the 64 grade and its hard to get anything but a clean cheek to go over 64

Todays standards call for an MS65+ to get the MS65 grade, even though one could easily see many MS65's in TPG holders right NOW especially NGC where your coin looks as good or better than those coins, but alas its a solid MS64+ IMHO still that puts it in a safe investment...one usually forgets that most of those coins in the Redfield Hoard HAVE such a "SPECAIL" silver Patina to them as they were NEVER DIPPED in any way...and have the "original skin" to them..one has to really look and COMPARE what a true original untouched coin really looks like to understand all the doctored and accepted BLAST WHITE coins out there in the market... As usual you take some really fine pictures!! but the original skin is very hard to capture as I am sure you can see "IN HAND".. I own several Redfields that are true "stand alone" coins for there ORIGINAL LUSTER that most never see this beauty in original luster.. but rather the majority of coins we find with brilliant luster that is "white" but not "A TRUE SILVER LUSTER" from an original skin coin as they were taken from the original mint bags and put into slabs,,,,One must remember that toned coins were not widely accepted back in the day and every shop had its own secret formula to enhance the LUSTER without damaging the surface, TRY TARNEX and see some months later how it has stripped the original layers off and it and what happens to the coins luster after a year or so! it can get real ugly...

Nice! Beautiful luster....It's a MS64 maximum in my opinion, I wouldn't pay 65 prices even in a TPG holder. I'd leave it in the Redfield holder.....Cheers!
