So the seller sent it to the wrong address and luckily it was returned to him. Sorry everyone, just wait a few more days!

Well regardless you have one beautiful coin! I am just starting my 3c(non-silver) collection. I just picked up 2 1865 and 1866 in VF condition plus I love the Trimes as well.

And by the way, I only touched the rims in order to take a snapshot at angles, and didn't place the two coins on top of each other directly :)

The original pics looked like a proof coin to me. Your new pictures show a good bit more detail but I can't make any kind of judgement from them. What's the chance of getting a straight on shot of the complete obverse & reverse? I think the lighting is distracting. Any way to light it without the reflection on the coin? Not trying to be critical...your pics are way better than mine generally are.

Amazing coin . What is that mark on the obverse, is that from the lighting? I am crossing my fingers for a business strike but the consensus seems to lean toward proof. I am very interested to see how a final determination of which it is arises. I think this was a wonderful find.

Thanks CoinsKelly! The mark on the obverse is really only noticeable from a certain angle, but it's a slight bit of discoloration. It's not raised nor depressed, it's just THERE. Can anyone help me out with any diagnostics?

Clarification: to determine what strike it is!

The original pics screamed proof to me. I'm still leaning that way after seeing your pics. However, I'm not qualified to give you an answer one way or another. Hopefully someone else with more experience with the series will chime in.

I realize this coin is rare, but that defective area on the neck would be a deal-killer. I would say this is where the TPG earns their pay, which means it will come back "no decision."

Fredd, what do you mean a no-decision? They wouldn't be abe to make a judgment and simply ship it back to me?

Recently, a ccf member sent in a 1977 (IIRC) half to see if they could confirm or deny that it was on a 40% silver blank. They sent it back no decision.

If you read the T&Cs, ANACS specifically says that they don't do off metal coins, so about the silver half, they might be out of luck if NGC and PCGS say the same.

Based on the edges, I'd say (impaired) Proof.
