I would go with F-12. I think all the letters in 'Liberty' are visible but not legible ( although difficult to tell because of the glare in the photo) and the lower edge of the headband is incomplete.

I'm gonna say VG-10 for liberty and the feathers.

Slabbed? I suspect LIBERTY is partially obscured by the plastic. If LIBERTY is complete, I'm going to say F15--nice one!

NGC also said F-12! Looks like the forum average again. Good job!

I think it's a very nice VG10, not enough detail to enter the Fine range IMO.

That's where I put it too David. Solid VG10. It's a beautiful original coin ;) Hope I can find one this nice when I'm ready for it!

I see it as a VG10, also, and it is a beautiful coin. I love the original surfaces on this one and color is gorgeous.
I am not surprised that NGC graded this at an F12 since I feel that NGC overgrades their key date coins to improve their pop reports. I could be wrong, but overall, NGC grades 1-2 points higher than I do and, as a result, I don't use them.
I think you probably would have received a VG10 from PCGS or ANACS, though I have seen the key dates get bumped up a grade just because of their desirability. I do so hate market-grading.
Sorry, but a Fine coin has a full LIBERTY. I just can't accept less than that for an F12 grade.

Quote: Sorry, but a Fine coin has a full LIBERTY. I just can't accept less than that for an F12 grade. I do agree that NGC tends to overgrade a lot of keys, but I think PCGS does too. Mine doesn't have a full liberty, but it's actually closer than the pics suggest. The L ERTY are all complete and the IB are about 1/2 complete. I guess I grade a bit more liberally as I usually think of a full LIBERTY as a requirement for VF....but I'm still pretty new to grading indians. What really blows me away about this coin are the surfaces. It has THE nicest richest chocolate surfaces of any circulated indian that I've owned. Although that is not saying much, but then I compared it to my circulated wheat collection, and it still stands out as having the cleanest surfaces. The pictures posted do not capture it. The surfaces are almost too perfect in richness of color, to the point that makes me wonder if it has been recolored. I can't stop staring at it under a loupe...I'm really tempted to turn this into an album coin when I get my DANSCO.

It's the prettiest 09-S I have ever seen John in this level of wear, you are a lucky man! I would be tempted to crack it out too. This may sound strange, but there is something cool about keys in a Dansco slot ;-)
