I haven't seen too much silver. Lol. I'm only 22 and didn't college coins until about 9 months ago. So I didn't even know about silver before then. haha. But yeah the guy sounded sketchy on the phone so I avoided him altogether.

We all started from ground zero. You are starting a few years older than I did. I started by buying one ASE every pay day at age 19, haven't missed a pay day in many, many years. I thought they were expensive back when I was buying them at about 6 bucks or so.

Let your 90% silver coins talk to you. Once you understand what they are saying, you are not likely to get taken. Counterfeit coins will not ring, they will clunk when dropped on a hard surface. Real silver coins always ring. Dang! I just grabbed a dime from my pocket to hear it talk. It said, "silver!" I looked. 1953 Roosevelt dime! Been years since I found silver in circulation!Try dropping copper clad coins and some 90% coins. Learn to recognize how they talk to you. If they say "silver" they are silver, not fake. If you have some iron slugs, like from electrical boxes, listen to them talk, too. Silver coins have a different color than other coins. Learn to see silver. After you have seen lots of silver coins, you are not likely to get burnt. The color of silver is a dead giveaway. And when they talk to you, you know for sure what you are buying. Other coins speak their own language, like pennies. Try various years of pennies and they will tell you 'copper' or 'zinc.'

The lowest I have ever seen gold is like $1380 or $1400. Once again I was oblivious to precious metals and coins until about december 2010. So I'm very new. I wish I saw prices all of you have seen when you first started collecting. But... Maybe in 20 years I will be talking about how cheap everything was these days.

I started about the same time, Late 2010. And I blame you guys. LOL.
It all started with me sitting at work, working my butt off... o.0 And some guy comes up to me and says, "check out this weird coin I found." I google it, leads me to this forum...BAM! I'm hooked. Started Roll hunting (but stopped since it effected work :P), got 3 bank tellers silver hunting for me ;) and now I've been waiting for the conventions to come around so I can get a chance to get something nice. I work long hours so never get a chance to visit coin shops. And so I've been slowly buying things when I get the chance or from craigslist. Never liked all the fees and shipping costs for online purchases, but I do stare at them all day long. So beautiful. Wish I lived in Australia with all their different silver bullion coins. *drools*

The lowest I have seen gold is $35 per ounce. Lowest for silver was $1.29 per ounce. That was a few days ago, though.

Quote: But... Maybe in 20 years I will be talking about how cheap everything was these days. No doubt about that at all. The kids then will be in awe of the old man who bought gold below $10,000 an oz. There are VERY few guarantees in life. Death, taxes, and fiat currencies inflating their way towards zero are about it. Quote: $35 an ounce for gold. holy cow! when on earth was that. Back in 1968 I was shopping for an engagement ring for my girl. At that time, the official price of gold was $35 an oz. You could not buy it for that, though. A friend of my mom was a jeweler and he was paying $125 an oz. He said that was the REAL price, never mind the official price. What about the girl, you ask? Well, I married her and we've been together for the last 42 years.

Yes, gold was fixed at $35/oz since the 1930s until Nixon took us off the gold standard. FDR devalued the amount in 1933 from a little over 20/oz to the 35/oz.

I agree Ed, I'm so lucky I found her early on in life too. Started dating 4 years ago when I was 18 and just graduated high school. Now I get to keep her for the rest of my life! :)
