The thing I don't get is just because a law says you can't melt nickels and pennies, what keeps places from doing it? Once it is melted you can't tell what it was, or do they have to report and record everything they melt and turn it in to the government?

Laws are laws and people break laws every day. People probably do melt cents, and nickels, but if they are caught they would get in trouble. You can't burn currency, but I bet if I burned a $1 bill in my room right now no one would find out and I would not get in trouble. But that doesn't make it legal. What keeps people from melting these coins is the law against it and the consequences of doing so that people want to avoid.

I think $1.40 is a very good deal for War Nickels in bulk.
I would do it. You can turn a profit right away, wait a while and see what the market does, or
add them to your collection. I would just keep a roll and sell the extras.

IF your going to buy them for Silver, I suggest you first find a place to resell them. And for a profit. Remember that if Silver starts to fall in price, your going to be stuck with something you don't want, can't use, can't sell.

Buy them! It's worth it. 50 coins at $1.40 each, you could help alot of people fill album holes at close to melt and make it worth while. I know I have more holes in the War Nickel era to fill than I would like. So I know you could do it quite easily.

Must not be a lot of bullion people on the section. War Nickles are now being bought for $37.73 at $1.00 face.

So if you are going to buy at $1.40 you are paying $28.

I sold 655 to APMEX on Monday I was in a hurry so I settled for $34.23 at $1.00 face for a total of $1,121.
Not bad for $32.75 worth of nickles.

655 nickles for a total of $1,121 = $1.71 each
Silver Value 1942-1945 Nickel = $2.4137
so that's is 70% of actual Silver Value ...
what % of actual Silver Value paid on dimes?
dimes are $3.1033 today
70% for Silver Nickels seems lower that other silver coins

Bill I did the math fast but I believe each nickle was worth $2.15, silver was at $38.30 when I sold them. So I sold them for 80%.

I bought these when silver was just under $5.00 so I made more than enough on them to let them go.

I see War Nickels in bargain bins at the one coin show I attend for like 1.25 a piece
I always forget to write down which ones I need though
then again if I am going to buy the coins I would rather get nicer coins rather then dark circulated War Nickels
plus I am 5 coins away from a circulated set.
Based on melt value it might be a good investment
you wouldn't lose money, so I would jump on it
