The lady is working today .. just waiting for her to get home. And hope I can get a look at it today. I have been looking online and have found two that look like she describes. This one is the closet to what she says it looks like. But hers is bigger. http://pensacola.craigslist.org/atq...7897045.htmlOf course I know what someone is asking and what they will take can be different. Of course I will ask her what she wants for it, and work from there. I am thinking $300 might be the most I would want to go. less if it is not so good .. little more if it is really nice. I did go to tractor supply co. today. They had Cannon and Winchester gun safes, medium size fire proof for $599. I like the idea of having a old safe .. but would have to be something that works well.

hopefully she has the combination. A lot of these old safes were the property of the husband and sometimes things like combinations got lost in translation. don't forget to figure out how to get it to your house, truck, two/three guys, plywood to cover existing floors and remember, safes are great if you get burglarized when you're not home but the combination is readily available to anyone that makes you give it to them.
That being said, old safes look way cool too.

Yes she has the combo .. she has been selling off her husband coin collection for the past couple months, he died a few years ago. She says I can look at his gun collection also.

Hmmmm selling off his coin collection, huh? Maybe you can work out some type of combo sale. The safe and some coins....

That would be great, $200 for a safe and $150 for a $5 gold piece :D

Make sure that you are comfortable opening the safe before you purchase it; my grandfather's old safe has a really finicky lock.

We left one that looked identical to the craigslist safe when we moved the shop. Couldn't even get someone to take it for scrap.
If it's locked out, and there may be contents of value, buy it to gamble. They tend to have minimal storage space, seldom are fire resistant, and won't stand up to modern tools and torches.
If you can move it yourself, fine, but otherwise, they ain't cheap.

I had a look at the safe this afternoon. It is a very old safe. First look ...it seemed pretty big, but not a lot of interior space. The walls of the safe are 4 or 5 inches thick.
She had 3 binders filled with 2x2 (one I looked at, had Morgans and half dollars) Then some mint stuff still in shipping boxes, two small drawers with rolled coins. and a smal stack of coin albums.
I like the look of the safe but it would not be able to hold all my coins. I know she will not go lower than $350 ...maybe $300. I think she got online and was seeing what some restored old safes were selling for.
Only had a small window of time today .. did not get to talk about the coins or the guns.

Lot of wasted space and if you need more room you may end up getting a bigger one later anyway so why not look for one now. Some of those old ones are excessively heavy and serve little purpose for room. And for that price, you could do better. Also, consider a banks safe deposit box for thr really valuable coins.

I ended up buying a gun safe from Costco. I twas about $250 0 $300 on sale. Tall, couple shleves, carpeted. Very nice. Take a look for a gun safe, nothing really heavy because when you load it with coins it will get heavier.

Are you going to weld it to the floor?

My first thought about buying a used safe is moving it. I would rather pay a bit more and have somebody bring it into my home for me. For one thing, I simply couldn't move the safe myself and if I enlisted some help and my friends got hurt struggling with it or cracked my door frame or something, well, I would be annoyed at myself for trying to save a couple of bucks.
I have to say that I like the look of the old-timey type of safe but that's about all. The new ones are just safer safes. I couldn't afford a big safe so I just got a small one, and then another. I also got some 'fireproof' lock boxes that I can pick-up all by myself. I am not convinced that they are great protection but I could grab those if I had to leave in a hurry.

what's to keep gun safe from being carried away?aren't most gun safes designed to keep the guns from becoming toys for children rather than actual theft deterrent?

Gun Safes are typically about 5 feet tall, 28"-36" wide and 22"-25" inches deep. They typically weigh about 400-600lbs empty.
And to keep any safe from being carried away, you bolt it to the floor or wall.
