That is the only information I was able to find about it online. I will try for better pictures.

The coin is a Contemporary Circulating COUNTERFEIT - a copy of the Riddell # 377. Riddell lists it as about 50% silver but I have seen copies that are lower grade than that.

For anyone interested the BIGGEST and very conclusive clue here is that the Eagle used on this coin was DISCONTINUED in favor of the French version in 1832. This coin is actually a copy of a coin that was made in 1829 but with rays that tilt to the right too far.

This is a COLLECTABLE Counterfeit coin however - not one that needs to me marked with the word copy. It is completely LEGAL but on ebay would be a violation to post properly described. I would certainly be interested in this counterfeit.

The online sources relative to the Mexican Cap and Ray series are not the best. The best book on the subject is RESPLANDORES - but it costs $125. The only book on the Counterfeits is Riddell's book - about $20 as a reprint and free on line.

If you ever get to the point where you want to sell it let me know.

Wouldn't a coin of this date and mintmark have both R.L. and R.M. on it? I can't find a listing for just that one engraver (R.L.). The closest listing I can find is 1839/1 Do RM/RL. I can't imagine why a counterfeiter would want to change the coin's design - so I think that this was tossed into a bulk deal, hoping it would pass as real.

Am I way off base?

As swamperbob said earlier, this coin is a Contemporary Circulating COUNTERFEIT - which is collectable.
It's not a modern chinese crap :)

Libertad The date and mint mark did not really matter to the forgers. In this case - they got the design totally wrong. The French Dies were still in use in 1839 so anyone familiar with 8Rs from Durango would have known instantly.

But these fakes were meant to be used in the US - NOT MEXICO.

It got evem worse with the forgeries made for China - the dates were 100 years off and sometimes the legends made so sense.
