Very interesting, but would have been better if the two news guys were funny.

Just another scripted "reality" show. Example 1: Most people pawn, yet somewhere around 90% of their customers sell.
If the name of your store was "gold and silver", and you sold out by noon, would you:
raise prices stock more gold and silver be sold out half the hours you're open

nnn... No doubt it's scripted to a certain extent. But again, this is main strip Vegas we're talking about, not your average downtown pawn shop. I'd bet he's not stretching it all that far when he says 90% sell. And, even the local small-time (opens only during weekends) silver/gold dealer tucked away in a corner at the farmer's market sells out every (200+ oz of silver) weekend the stock he accumulates over the weekdays.

1) they admit that something like 60% pawn, but on the show, almost everyone sells.
2) you can't sell from an empty cart.

I like Chumlee! One of the reasons I watch the show.
I think the name Gold and Silver Pawn Shop is just a name to draw people into the store.

I saw another interview with him where he showed all their silver, and he had safes full of slabbed silver coins. Of course this was a couple of years ago.

All I remember is going in there (was not impressed in the least) and seen their G & S coins with ridiculous prices, I almost laughed until I was choking. It's a tourist trap, that's it.

"Got to remember Pawn Stars is in the tourist strip of Vegas though. I bet a good majority of their buyers are tourists and not regulars. That would also be a key reason why they may be able to sell for higher than what some pieces are worth. Tourists that can afford to visit the casino strip in Vegas for what it is are likely not the best at bargain hunting" My dad always said...."Kid, start a bus in Gatlinburg, you have more tourists coming through there then anywhere!" And he went on to say, that when him and his buddies went out to Vegas a time or two back in the day, they all had a pocket full of money, an they were blowin it on everything one could imagine just like all tourists do, lol.... I will never forget, he had one poker buddy who has since past on, and him and another friend went back up the room to find him after being in the hotel for like 90 minutes, and he was in his boxers drinkin an eating some room service. An they said...."Jim what gives, thought you came to gamble?", an he replied...."Ah blown out!" An my dad asked...."What, how much are you down?", an he replied..."Fifty grand, blown out."

Betcha you couldn't borrow 50 large from him to start a gold buying biz
Gatlinburg-admittedly, it was 1BD, but it struck me as wall-to-wall junk.

That was back in the late 80's, perhaps early 90's Fredd, so imagine if he had went down to Rick's shop an bought 50 grand worth of gold then instead of blowin 50 grand in 90 minutes at the casino. Those premiums would have hurt at the time, but he might still be alive as I figure a couple of those 50 grand blow outs could kill any of us. Just the stress alone, I would be grabbin my heart like Fred Sanford, yellin to Elizabeth that I was comin home, lol....
Of course that would have been boring....
And yes, Gatlinburg is another tourist trap, full of cheap junk like carved tree trunk art, saw blade paintings, wooden carved black bears, yard Gnomes, I could go on all day, lol....

The shop is more of a tv curiosity with one case of PM and notes. If you like paying retail you will love paying double.

I visited his store earlier this year. The amount of gold and silver coins was small and overpriced. The store is also much smaller and darker than it appears on TV.
I'm sure Rick is making a fortune. He does the TV show, the book, they actually do a traveling show, plus he says he has other businesses.

Quote: The store is also much smaller and darker than it appears on TV. Probably the production crew add extra light sources and films at certain angles/locations just before a shoot to make the place seem lighter and larger. That's my guess.

Interesting, as it always looks like a long brightly lit room leading to the doors, and they never really give you a good panorama camera view of the store and the cases.... Yes, an I stopped by my dads earlier an told him I had mentioned that story, and he went to laughin an added that later before they left Vegas, they stopped by a dog track, and the guy who blew 50 grand in about 90 minutes bet 300 on the long shot dog, which would have gotten a big chunk of his loses back. Anyhow, the rabbit took off, and my dad said...."Jim, which dog is yours?", and he replied.... "The one defecating (I figure he used different word) in the middle of the track." My dad said he just shook his head, ripped the ticket up and walked away, rof ....
