I totally agree with jfransch, I'm not - at all - on this grading craziness.
I see this as another way for some to make money (and a LOT when you see prices between different MS levels). The only opinion that counts to me is your own opinion - and everything you know about the coin and its history. This has way more value than everything else.
About the fingerprint - I don't mind much, and I prefer it much more with it than the previous slabbed coin TwoKopeiki won on ha
I was even wondering wether it could be scanned and searched for in some database :p
Oh, and about proofs ... I don't like them either. I only collect coins that are made to be used, proofs are IMHO another area of collection (as medals are for example, or as different pieces of art). (I got a proof set of my birth date, in dollars and another one in french francs ... that's the only exception with the one of my wife and son)

I'm afraid that I'm caught in a Registry craze with my collection. A few years ago I helped folks @ NGC and PCGS put together Mexico registry sets and I now feel responsible to participate. Plus until I finish building my own site I have to rely on others to host the images. I currently own https://www.resplandores.com and https://www.ochoreales.net and going to build them out eventually with research and photos. And Mathieu - quit picking on me for the HA win. I'm not proud of what I've done and it most likely will not stay more than a couple of months in my collection :) Edited by TwoKopeiki

I actually stopped - for now - collecting coins after Carolus IV - mainly because the spanish empire was starting to be dismantled, and also because there were so much variety (catalan occupation, independence war in different colonies and so on)
I think I'll soon rethink that and go a bit further - that period is very interesting indeed.
Oh, if you need help with your site or image hosting ... that's my job since over 12 years now (I'm actually on the internet since 1995).
I can host your coin pictures if that avoids you to have them slabbed just for this ;)

Something tells me you're not a huge fan of coin slabbing, Mathieu :) Thank you for your offer of hosting the site and photos, but it's my pet project and i'd like to execute it myself. I've also been in technology since mid-90's, just need to find the time to do it.
I also won both 1820 Zacatecas NGC AU55 pieces and the PCGS MS62 1807 8 Reales. I'll post images when I get home.

Hehe, well I don't have any slabbed coin yet - will receive my first from HA.com soon - I'll see how I like it.
But I'm sure I'll miss checking it out in hands, checking the rim and details, feeling its weight ...
It's a guarantee that the coin can be considered 99% safe - although buying from specialized retailers usually gives the same result :) (it's better for resell though - if you want to get big bucks on a highly graded coin)
Oh, I hope you'll find time to move forward with your project, seems overly interesting :)

I tried to find the two coins you won, but couldn't figure out why their search engine don't retrieve the last auction ...

I won one of the 8 reales 1653 cobs from mexico (to replace the fake one I ended having for free from china) - and got screwed when placing a bit on a lot ...
I almost ended winning the next coin, hopefully someone did bid higher on that one ...
After checking the logs - seems I placed a strange bid on the first lot (not even a half increment, not sure how it happened) - got overbid, and did increase the bids on the next coins which was then closed (they reopened it).
I'm glad I didn't won it, bug I wish I hadn't lost the previous lot (I wanted one coin on the two in it, but the second one could be resold for almost the complete price - was a nice deal)
Will post pics once I receive everything :)

The frosty mint details on the Carolus IIII are impressive !

I really like the look of that 1807 as well.

I got up to Long Beach last week. I thought the show was very slow, empty tables, small crowd.
Checked out Heritage. I'm currently all over Mexico 1/2 reals. Heritage had a few that I looked at, and believe me I was disapointed with NGC on some of these.
The Mexico 1738 1/2R MS 66, sure nice toning and maybe as struck, but old bad dies. I did not bid.
The 1814 1/2R also a NGC 66 had what looked like old drawer wear. I was outbid.
Outbid on the hookneck 8 escudos, this is a nice coin and I was way low.
Only won a 1816 1/2R. The coin looked very nice in hand.

The klippe went for way too much. I picked up a KM 48 NGC 45 for $1000 late last year.

I have a couple things I want to touch on (when I get a chance to write it up) regarding the 8R and other pieces from the Heritage auction being discussed... One quick thing, though, the 1734 klippe is a good bit scarcer than the 1733 (though 1733 F brings a premium over the usual 1733 MF). It probably did go a bit high, but it looks to have perfect grey surfaces and good centering (causing that date to be ever so slightly off-center). IIRC, this piece jumped about $1000 from the end of pre-bidding... a couple people really wanted it, I suppose.

I wanted to bid online on that one, and didn't tried pre-bidding. I suppose it's my ebay habits, to not attract more bidders and inflate prices before the end :D The coin was indeed the best klippe I saw in the last two years, very detailed, well centered, with a nice patina. With the late date (for a klippe) - it helped prices go high. I'll wait for another one, I don't want to have each date / essayer actually, just a nice one :) |

Here is the 8 escudos - it's gorgeous :)   Also received my first certified coin - I confirm I don't like those plastic coffins ... The coin has a beautiful edge, can't even see it properly. |

That's a nice 8E... Yeah, cobs are meant to be held, but for gold like that, slabbing (understandably) has almost become sort of mandatory for resale. Buy some cheapo beat-up sea-salvage 8R, close your eyes and pretend :-> .
I was actually just about to resurrect this thread, as the 1809 Mex 8R that was discussed has made its reappearance... Despite the typical strike, the absolutely booming luster justifies the grade, I think. Some people dislike "untoned" (a term which can imply chemical involvement), but when full original frosty luster is present... THAT is truly a mint state appearance.
Kopeiki (or anyone else), looking beyond strike and any toning/"eye appeal" interference, what are your thoughts on this unworn 1809 compared to that PCGS58 (a 58 technically - theoretically - being just a wisp of wear away from uncirculated) and the NGC58?
