I have not looked at 50 cent coins yet, however the date on the 5 cent coin looks quite widely spaced in 1999 (when compared to other years), so I think it may be just the way all the 1999 coins were made.

I have posted a picture of coin in another topic about a clipped planchet 5 cent.
That coin just happens to be dated 1999.
Comparing the date on the 5 cent to the date on your 50 cent, I think they look the same.
I think on both 5c and 50c, if you were to rotate the '9's around the centre of the circular part of the number, then the tail would just touch the number in front.

It even looks like the word Australia is spaced out further as well.
Good spotting.

Might I suggest that you compare it to another 1999 50 cent? I believe you will find them all to be a same.

I've noticed that you 50 cent coin has 12 sides to it insted of being round.
Maybe thats an error coin as well
Sorry mat I couldn't resist that.
Have a look at all the dates 1999 upwards and they are all wider than the older coins

50 cent varieties apart from the prior list of Double Bars that I am aware of:
1970 -- Tilted 7: Level 7
1994 -- Narrow Date -- Wide Date
2000 -- Normal Flag -- Incuse Flag
2004 -- Small Head -- Large Head (Found in Sets Only - similar to 2004 20c, top of A is either pointed or flat)

I'm not aware of varieties for 1996 or 2007, but that's not to say they don't exist.
