Industrial hard chrome plating looks just like the picture and matches your physical description. That would be my guess

Thank you for your thoughts guys. I will get it checked out by a coin dealer thoroughly and I will post my findings. Very disappointed. :(

So here the real question.... does any actual 1974 aluminum penny exist and owned by anyone?

Is it true that the obverse die for the aluminum cents was also used for the regular copper cents? Because I noticed that 1974 coppers have two different busts, a high-relief detailed one (I think this is the alum obv one) and a flatter, less detailed one.

Quote: does any actual 1974 aluminum penny exist and owned by anyone?
Two are known, one example in the National Numismatic Collection and the Toven Specimen posted by vermontensium. It is named after a Capitol Police Officer who purportedly received it from a Congressman and it is the only confirmed example in private hands. Quote: Is it true that the obverse die for the aluminum cents was also used for the regular copper cents? Two types exist for 1974, Large Date and Small Date. Aluminum cents and proofs are of the Large Date type and both types are equally prevalent for copper business strikes.

Quote: Au so it has been circulated ? Funny thing about that. Part of the story is that the coin was in the unnamed Congressman's pocket and it fell out, Toven retrieved it and attempted to give it back but the Congressman told him to keep it. It is also worth noting that it has since been regraded MS-62 by PCGS, so much for ICG being a liberal grader The coin is still owned by the Toven family and the Secret Service has made no attempt to seize it. However, any attempt to auction/sell it would probably garner their attention.

I betcha that coin was rubbed with mercury. I used to do that when I was a kid.
The mercury forms an amalgum type of alloy with the copper surface.
I would NEVER do that now. Then, I had no idea the mercury was a cumulative poison, which accumulates in the fat tissues of the body to stay there, semi permanently. That is scary.
Then, I never even used rubber gloves!
