It's Buyer beware! I'll only buy on E-bay with PayPal.

Andrea Stairs, an ebay Canada spokesperson, described the incident as "not typical to ebay," noting that according to the information she has, the seller, who spoke no English, used a translation program and listed the item in good faith.

The incident "was the result of a couple of really unusual events," says Ms. Stairs. "We have a zero tolerance for counterfeits and we're doing our best to make sure that those things don't hit the marketplace," she says, adding that ebay works with the RCMP, the provincial police forces and members of the numismatic community to develop guidelines and policies that help protect buyers from purchasing illegal merchandise.

"not typical...in good faith...a couple of really unusual events...zero tolerance for counterfeits"

umm...yeah, OK...whatever sounds good to shareholders. ebay might have "zero tolerance" for counterfeits, but it also has near-zero enforcement for the same.
However you view their involvement, ebay is a major source of such forgeries.
"It's Buyer beware!" Nobody should buy key coins off ebay without assurance of authenticity. That was a very expensive lesson learned.

What's been bothering me is how many counterfeits I've seen on ebay. If I see a suspect coin I check the sellers completed auctions by looking at the feedback left. Some of the buyers give the seller praise! Either not knowing they were ripped off by a chinese seller or plan on reselling known counterfeit for a profit. Either way it's scary.

I know...counterfeits are rampant, and not just coins--and not just stuff from China. Many of the worst offenders (distributors) are in the US.
I've seen a lot of fakes of Swiss watches too, such as Tag Heuer--and it took me contacting TH legal counsel to get the auctions pulled. ebay could have done the same, but here it took individual initiative. That's why the online community & education is so important--and why I'm dismayed at ebay's attempts to limit the community, such as making bidder IDs secret. I can no longer easily warn buyers of fakes. At least we have forums like this one to help educate collectors.

To avoid being victimized by a counterfeit coin, it's best to stick to coins that have been independently examined, graded and encapsulated in tamper-proof holders.

they don't mention that the Chinese are counterfeiting these as well.

i was always worried that people would buy from china fakes and then pass them off as authentic coins in the u.s. it just seems so easy to me people in my opinion have a tendency to trust people from there own country a little more.

if you are a novice collector and you know fakes are coming from china and you see a listing from china you avoid it. but if someone from your own country lists a coin you really don't think hey this person could have bought this coin from china and is now re-listing it as authentic. in my opinion

After reading this and several other articles on Chinese counterfeiting and fake watches etc., I've just decided to avoid E-bay in general. If I buy a fake coin from a dealer and he won't take it back, I know where I can find him...

Thing is, despite the fact that he bought them on ebay, he can probably sue the Quebec seller in small claims court in Quebec and win. He probably has enough correspondence and witnesses to be able to do so; all he needs is a Quebec agent/representative (not necessarily a lawyer) to handle the matter for him before the judge.
