Thank you :) . It's quite easy here to find a nice cheap coin like this in a similar condition. This one was 35$, but like elsewhere the fakes are like 80% of all coins on the market.

WHAT? Eighty percent of all coins on the market are fakes? I don't think that is accurate. Perhaps with the more expensive and rare coins, but not common coins. I believe the percentage is much much less. Perhaps 20 percent, but not 80 percent. I wonder, are you talking about coins in Bulgaria? If so, your number may be more accurate. I refuse to buy from any seller in Bulgaria because of the sheer number of fakes that come out of that country. Does anyone else have a feel for the percentage of fakes on the market?

Fake ancient coins from Eastern Europe have been increasing over the last few years, though it's not as bad as fake US and European coins from China that have been flooding the market. I would say that in the US we are seeing 15-20% fake ancients, but in Europe the figure is much higher.

but in Europe the figure is much higher. How high? Many of my coins originate in places like Spain, France, Italy and Greece. Even some have come from Slovakia and Poland. I stay away from buying high end coins from Eastern Europe and only buy these from known and trusted dealers. But even some of these are in Europe in such places as Belgium, Switzerland and the UK. Since for whatever reason the Greeks or the Romans did not see fit to set up mints in the U.S., all our Ancients must come from Europe and the Middle East. Lord I hope the percentages are a little more in our favor than 20%. JW |

Not wanting to offend anyone I made a general statement and said Europe. I should have been more specific and said Eastern Europe with the most coming out of Bulgaria. I would estimate at least 50% if not more are coming from this region.

I was talking about expensive coins. That's why every time I buy a coin I have doubt about it. It was couple of years ago a friend of mine went to a very respectful auction in eastern Europe and came back with 5 really great coins. It later turned out that 2 of those coins were fake. The market is flooded with high quality fakes.

The biggest problem I see is that it won't be long before these crooks figure out they can make a ton of money by selling fakes of common, low cost Roman coins. There are more people than ever entering into this hobby mainly because of the internet. If these crooks figure out that they can sell 1 coin for a $1000 or 1000 coins for $10-20, where do you think they will gravitate? Perhaps already, but I don't think so. Not yet. JW |

In Bulgaria better to buy a uncleaned lots or to search with metal detector.If you buy only one coin you need to see HQ pics.If you dont then dont buy.Maybe from all of my purchased ancient only 5% are fake.And for that I go search with my metal detectors :)

:D Come in bulgaria and its not problem.Once I find an old jar with 5 roman coins and 17 turkish in my back yard on my villige.I was suprised because in the back yard I only find new coins 1808-2001
