Why Are High Grade Roosevelt Dimes So Hard To Come By?

cc99999 Pillar of the Community United States 1302 Posts	Posted 10/12/2011 9:20 pm I have a handful of 1996 W dimes from mint sets that I'm considering to send to PCGS. The prices seem to be outrageous for what is, essentially, an easy to come by dime. My dimes look clean for all I can tell- nice luster, no hits, some natural toning... They look MS-66 to me... should I expect to be disappointed? Is there something I just don't understand about grading this series? Report this Post to the Staff

Roosevelt dimes are indeed quite frequently found in high grades, I own several NGC MS67 silver Roosevelts and I did not pay over $40 for any of them. The 1996W(key to the clad series) is also frequently found in high grades and with full bands as it was essentially a one-off commemorative issue only available in Mint Sets. IMO, it is not worth the expense of slabbing one unless it is an absolute lock for at least MS67. Even in that lofty grade, Numsimedia only lists it as a $45 coin(MS68 is better @$100).
