Howdy,

I am a newbie to coin collecting, today I got my first gold US type coin, a 1861 quarter eagle. Its clearly been cleaned or molested in some way, altho I am not sure exactly what. Its very shiny and somewhat 'not sharp', mainly on the face side. I got it for $270 today which is $58 over spot at this moment. I am not that worried that its been cleaned, I am just trying to learn more about it. After looking at it for some time I noticed that the front hair on the neck is totally missing.

I took some webcam images, not the clearest shots but probably enough for you experts to give me a pointer. I weighted the coin and it is 4.112 grams, and the diameter is exactly 18mm so I am not suspecting its a phoney coin.

Thanks!

-David

It's a nice quarter eagle but it does looked polished, that would reduce it's value to melt.

Weight and diameter are good so, unless the coin is overly thick, it's likely genuine.

It was heavily polished at some time and may have been a jewelry piece. Quarter-eagles usually bring a premium over melt unless damaged. $58 over melt is a bit high but not too bad.
