Hello! I've just started reading the posts in the world coins section, and there's almost nothing about coins from France. Is it just the timing (nothing posted about it recently), or are there just not that many collectors of French coins in the Coin Community family? I really like these commemorative coins, and I believe that the French Mint has a very high standard of quality. I quite often enjoy the subjects they decide to illustrate and commemorate.

I have a collection of world coins. I can tell you which French circulating coins I am trying to complete a set of. I am trying to do a 10 francs and 100 francs collection. I have kind of put these world sets that I would like to do to the side for now though as I am trying to complete my Franklin half dollar set by the years end. After that I am going to try to catch up on these and my Great Britian 6p set.

Some of there designs are very nice. I have a small collection of older French coins and the modern French euros. I tend to pick up the old 5 & 10 centimes coins from the 1850's when I find them.

I'm absolutely sure a lot of people here collect French coins as we have quite some number of world coins collectors.
But you are right, there's not so much said about French coins in specific. But you know there are almost 200 countries, and you may have noticed only US, Australian, British, Canadian and ancient coins have their seperate sections. It's all supply-demand thing :)
One day maybe some more European members join here and we'll have German, Italian etc. coins sections as well.
I guess I have roughly about 30 different French coins. Commemorative Francs are my favourite.

As a collector of world coins, I do have some French coins, but only 13. My favourite, although very worn, is an 1855 5 Centimes. You can view them in my gallery, if you like. Steve

Like many other collectors I have a world coin collection including many french coins. They are indeed one of my favorite themes in my collection. I think however you are more interested into the proof issues, created especially for collectors? I am not sure many world coin collectors are really into such coins - from any country.

I like French gold coins, the francs. I only own a rooster and the angel but do hope to acquire more.

I was thinking that the euro currency, with a common side and a country-specific side, will create a lot of euro collectors. 16 countries are now using it, and most of the 11 other eurozone countries will start using it in the next few years.

You are correct. Those are the ones I was referring to. I guess it is less popular than circulating coins. There's something to be said, though, about the silky look of freshly-minted silver, a perfect mirror surface surrounding a detailed frosty design of the Eiffel tower or the one they call The Sower, a nice series not unlike our american eagle series.

True, but the (silver, gold etc.) collector coins don't really have much to do with the concept of a currency union. I can use any of the circulation coins and commemorative €2 pieces anywhere in Euroland, but those collector issues are not legal tender anywhere outside the issuing member state. I do have several French franc and euro silver pieces. But the Monnaie de Paris issues way too many IMO. My current (2006) euro catalog has 700 pages for the coins of these 16 countries, and France alone has about 150 pages ... Christian
