I disagree about "preserving wealth" through buying after the apocolypse.... After an apocolypse all your wealth will have dissapeared (the money won't be worth anything but the precious metals WILL be worth SOMETHING)
If you want to know what to invest in before an apocalypse I would vote "Land and buildings and supplies" if it all goes pear-shaped these will be far more useful than anything else.
I am of the opinion that there will be a major collapse of currency and pollitical systems with-in my lifetime, but I live in london and can't own firearms. I won't worry about it for now, I will just live on the day to day and try and make the most of my life.

Well that was a complete waste of 10 minutes of my time I used to get some entertainment from such threads of yours greenprint but as I read them again and again and again the entertainment factor fades and I cant help but think get a job. That is the only sure way to make money. You cant eat gold or silver or copper and you cant defend your family with it and neither can anyone else. In an apocalyptic world people will want what they can use to survive. That will not be gold and silver.

Quote: You cant eat gold or silver or copper... There are MANY things in life that are incredibly useful and valuable but not edible. Just because one cannot eat PMs is NOT a valid reason for not owning some of them. But... to each their own. If you choose not to compete with me in the PM market, that will be JUST FINE with me! Quote: ...you cant defend your family with it... Sure you can. Just buy a 100 oz. bar. When you are attacked by someone, grab the bar, scream "PM ATTACK! and bash them in the head with it. Presto! Instant defense of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Quote: In an apocalyptic world people will want what they can use to survive. True... as far as it goes... but, at some point people WILL begin to trade and do business again. When that happens (it always does), might one not then need some medium of exchange? Carrying around a small bag or pouch of gold and silver is a lot more convenient than carrying around a herd of cows, a pile of lumber, or a ton of wheat. This is not guesswork on my part. 5,000 or so years of history support it. I suppose that one could say that "this time it's different". While this certainly is possible, it is often the case that this time is not different in history. It is just "different" to those suffering through such times.

Maybe its just me but when I think apocalypse (which I dont think will happen) I think survival more so than getting rich.

Without getting into definitions and word origins, IMHO, the word "apocalypse" in our day and age carries too much drama and finality to be useful for these discussions. However, EOTWAWKI has happened to countless civilizations down through the ages. And time and again it has been the well prepared and the fortunate who have survived and often flourished in the future.

Quote: I think survival more so than getting rich. Same here. Clearly, no one will have everything they need to survive when the next SHTF situation arrives. Because of this, having something that can be traded by people so that they can get what they need to survive is a good thing. This is where the PMs will come in handy... not during a SHTF event but afterwards when we are all picking up the pieces and trying to rebuild our futures. As to whether some do or do not believe it will happen... well, a lot of folks in the "Roaring 20s" sure didn't think that an economic collapse was coming but that did not prevent it from happening. Those who had real money came through the terrible days of the 1930s OK. Those who did not had a MUCH more difficult time of it. Speaking of those days... my great grand parents were born in the 1870s. They did not trust banks at all, so buried their money. When the crash of '29 came along, they owned their farm, had no debt, and were not invested in Wall Street at all because they did not trust that system either. They believed in hard money and hard money only. They did fine in the 1930s and were even able to help their family, some close friends, and even some strangers get through those days. Anyone who came by their farm and was willing to work for food was hired for the day. Most of these men moved on after a day or two but they always put on a good meal for those who would work for it. They did not believe in giving away free handouts but a job, even for a day or two, was not a hand-out. It was a hand-up.

Quote: this will really help in the event of a vampire led apocolypse Funny. I'm reading a book now about a similar event. It's called, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter". It seems the vamps were behind the American civil war, as they were determined to keep their supply line of slaves flowing from Africa at all costs, as this was their primary source of blood. Lincoln, having lost his mother to a bloodsucker, set out to stop them. Revisionist fiction, sure, but still an entertaining read, so far.

Drudging up an old thread!! Awesome thread to read through. The one question I have: Will my MS65 1889 CC Morgan silver dollar be worth 300,000 worth of something, or just .7735 oz of silver?

If an Apocalypse is coming, it will make not one jot of difference if you sell or not.
Before OR after.

Actually this thread is more appropriate now than it was back in 2012. Hard to believe how much things have changed these last two years. With Ebola, financial collapse, and ISIS now a threat to the homeland, an even greater threat is the loss of the power grid which no one seems to take seriously. If that goes kiss everything goodbye. No water, no food, no fuel, everything stops. I really don't think metals will help us at that point and even cash won't get you much. Beans and bullets is what you'll need.
