Today I literally picked up a deep brown 1947 Canadian penny while cleaning out an old house. This wouldn't have peaked my curiosity except that this coin is as thin, visually thinner than a dime. Is this form of error common and/or valuable.

Could be a number of things....

Hopefully it is an error/underweight planchet or a split planchet. Fingers crossed for you!

I would have to say though that a likely explanation is that it is an acid-dipped coin.

A photo would be great. An acid dipped coin would have an unusual look to it and would have suffered some loss of details.
