Here is one for the colonial copper folks who like to ID varieties:

Picked up this NJ Copper last night. I suspect it might be a Serpent Head.

Has all the major hallmarks of Maris 54-k. Weight should be under 6g, though this one has obviously lost some metal. Neat find!

Nice acquisition. I concur, Maris 54-k. The planchet void does not detract from the major design elements, making it easily identifiable.

The expert consensus seems be that this variety was actually a circulating contemporary counterfeit.

I just found this piece of information regarding the variety:

"There are also some very rare lightweight counterfeit New Jersey coppers, as Maris 79-ee, 80-ff, 81-ll, 83-ii and 84-kk (no more that 3 or 4 examples of any of these varieties survive) along with a more common counterfeit copper called the "Serpent Head" variety, Maris 54-k (an R3, with 151-250 examples surviving). The "Serpent Head," which was the only mass produced counterfeit, was attributed by generations of numismatists to a man named Hatfield."
