The bride (MountainLady) and I are going to set out on a new adventure in a few days. We have a house sitter, the PD has been notified, one neighbor will care for the grass, and another will feed the dog. So, we are ready to go. Go where? Well, it will be quite a trip. We will drive to Denver, and from there fly to Toronto, Canada. Then we change planes and fly to Santiago, Chile. If you don't know your geography, check it out. Looks like it's located darn near to Antarctica. From Santiago we travel to port city Valpariso and board a cruise ship. Then we sail north, stopping twice at ports in Chile and twice at ports in Peru, and of course crossing the equator. Next it's through the Panama Canal, and then after a stop or two at Mexican ports we arrive in Miami, then fly to Houston, then to Denver, and then drive home. Heck of a trip! In care you're wondering why we fly to Canada in order to get to Chile, it is due to the price of tickets. Besides, I've never been to Canada! Should any members have suggestions regarding travel in Chile and Peru, those suggestions would be welcome in that this is our first venture to South America. Also, are there any suggestions as to what coins we should look for, and does anyone know of good coin shops, especially in Santiago? Any suggestions or information is most welcome. We hope to be able to report some good coin finds in a few weeks. Thanks very much!! Edited by Gary Burke 03/31/2007 07:32 am

In Peru and Chile, don't waste your time looking for "mint sets" of uncirculated coins - apparently neither country makes them. Both countries have had inflation problems in the past, though their economies are now much more stable. Old, obsolete coins and notes are probably not too hard to find. Peru's inflation was worse than Chile's, even qualifying as "hyperinflation" in the late 1980's - Peruvian notes denominated in thousands and millions of "intis" are fairly cheap, according to the catalogues. Be careful not to pay a high price for small change! If you want to add a bit of an Australian flavour to your trip, Chile apparently has started using "Australian style", Australian-made polymer (plastic) banknotes. Keep an eye out for the 2000 peso note. Have a nice trip!
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

My only suggestion is, have a great time. Oh! don't forget, when you cross the equator it is tradition to get thrown into the swimming pool (I guess you will have one on board). I hope you both have a great time, you deserve it. Steve

Sounds like a wonderful trip, Gary. Hope you and your wife have a great time. I don't know how long your port calls are in Peru, but if you can get up into the Andes it would be well worth your time (assuming you enjoy high altitudes and alpine scenery!) My sister was there a few years ago and absolutely loved it.
Best wishes!

I thought it was customary to get a tattoo when you crossed the equator? Now that would be a vacation to remember! And seriously if you are a wine drinker then South America is awesome. Peru makes great wines. Have fun, Michael

I've been wanting to go on a fishing trip to Chile for years. When I eventually do get there I intend to visit the "Museo Casa de Moneda" (roughly translated museum of currency?)located near the mint in Santiago. Maybe you could scout it out for me.
