Here's a Pius IX for year X (Mazio 703). The Vatican used some terrific engravers! 43mm, weight unknown. Edited by yarm 02/19/2013 10:47 pm

Bob, that's some fantastic detail! I have seen a few of these at auction, but I have never pulled the trigger. Just curious, what's the diameter and weight on that beauty?

Pius IX had a long reign during which some terrific architectural medals were produced. I won't know how exactly how large this one is until it arrives, but it's north of 70mm.

Thanks, that's going to require a lot more exploration!
The medal has arrived! 73mm/6mm thick, 208gm. Ref. Bart. XXIV-13.

Some of the larger Papal medals feature amazingly detailed engraving and deep perspective. This Pius IX medal of 1874 (82mm, 265gms) is by Bianchi. The reverse shows the interior of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome as it existed in the mid-19th century.

The further I go back with Papal medals, the more restrikes I encounter with die rust, cracks, Cuds and other features. Nevertheless, I found this one somewhat pleasing.

These medals are amazing. Where can I learn more about them, specifically acceptable prices? I went to the link above, while it appears to have alot of information, I unfortunately cannot read Italian.
