I bought a token which was included in a lot in a recent German coin auction. It is very similar to this one, whose images I found in a site called "WorthPoint" or something ... the images were originally taken from an ebay auction (I need some time to take my own pictures of this...):

The reference for this item is located on p. 116 of the book "Patriotic Civil War Tokens" by the Fuld brothers as follows:

Quote:
114A 114A g L R9
(Same obv & rev. die, electrotype; aki Cpl L, Spl L, Tpl L)

My example is probably some kind of copy since it also has a hole located at exactly the same spot! It has a copper-colored finish, but could also be paint. The coloring goes into the hole, too, so I'm fairly sure it isn't one of the "2 to 4 known" examples of this type.

But I noticed that some token copies seem to be legitimate and are even sold at reputable auctions. Is there any other documentation for this type?

Here are pictures of my piece ... hard to say which is the obverse and which is the reverse, since the same dies were used.

Both my token and that shown in the original post seem to be cast copies with the legends showing the typical fuzziness around the edges. The third picture in this post shows a detail of the hole where the copper color continues into the hole; also, it clearly shows a cast mark running along the edge.

Looks like a plier was used to test the edge on the first image ... might have been done by the faker to make it look more "genuine". Also, there is what looks like a filled hole on the word "DIED" on one side, but interestingly not on the other side (on both coins).

Interesting. I hope someone with better knowledge will share it here.
