Hello. I got problem with this coin. Some sources say that it is a silver coin. However, the majority, including catalogs writes about cupronickel. The photo with the other silver coin, shade is slightly different, but it may be guilty of lighting. Seller swears that he bought this coin as silver, from "one of the biggest dealers in the United States." NGC says that the coin is proof version of cupronickel. Below are links to pages that say about silver proof version. What do you think? EDIT: Weight is about 27g.

the bird on the coin is a Kotoku ( white heron)

http://www.nzbirds.com/birds/kotuku.html

The coin was produced for New Zealand day ( now called Waitangi day) My memory may be faulty I had thought some of these were in Silver but referring to my NZ coin catalog (NZ premier) I find no mention of an issue in silver in 1974. The catalog is not much help it doesn't mention the alloy so by default I am assuming it was Cu/Ni as the catalog mentions Silver for issues in later years. Checking Krause 38th edition I only find, like you, Cupro-nickel. I recall in 1974 the commonwealth games issue was produced in CU/NI and silver and the NZ catalog makes no reference to this in the main body of the catalog, but Krause does record the silver games issue...on balance I think your coin is likely to be CU/Ni. I checked the intro to the NZ catalog and it refers to only the games dollar as being silver. Silver Dollar coins were issued from 1977 to 1990. I will see if I can find some other mention in NZ numismatic journal articles

I think weight of coin may be the key here. Different sources give different weight. NGC - 28,28g, numista 27,5g, australianstamp - 27,2g. Perhaps this too will be a clue - New Zealand Nuphil Nu71. I do not know what to think, I see that on this coin is a lot of different information, even as basic as weight or diameter... Thank you for your involvement.

Good point on the weight: I have emailed a contact in the RNSNZ asking if any of the NZ day coins were produced in Silver. Hopefully he'll get back to me

Update: he got back to me, as a fellow of the Royal Numismatic Society of New Zealand I would accept his advice as Authoritative: He informs both the uncirc strikes and the proof strikes ( of the Kotoku)were produced in Cu/ni only. That year it was only the Commemorative Commonwealth games Dollars that were produced in Silver (proof) and Cu/Ni(uncirc). So there is no way that Coin is Silver. Sorry!
