I just purchased an 1820 Large Date, Coronet Large Cent from my brother-in-law for $100. He, somehow, purchased this at an auction for $7.50. I did some research and have determined it is Newcomb #13, because it has the die crack that encircles the obverse. I don't know anything about large cents. My questions are:

1) What do you think it would grade?
2) Should I send it to a TPG to get it slabbed?
3) Which TPG do you guys recommend?
4) Did I do ok spending $100?

Thanks folks, I need all the help I can get on something this old! Any other advise would be greatly appreciated.

This is beauty. I agree with AU50. Should retail at about $250. I want to know where he got it for 7.50. That's the deal of the year right there!

for sure the deal of the year! If he only paid 7.50 for it why did he charge you $100? Not exactly a family discount there!

He went to an auction (Meares Auctions) in Pelzer, SC. It was a bankruptcy coin auction there about a month ago. I think you can still look at what they had on their website. Anyway, it went up with an opener of $7.50. He was the only one to bid. Do you guys think ANACS is the way to go?

Hey Jerry,
When he brought it home, I could have got it for $40 but didn't have the cash. He doesn't know anything about coins and was going to take it to the flea market and sell it for $40. I looked it up and told him what he had, so he put $100 on it and has had no luck at the flea market. They have 5 kids and my wife's sister is a stay at home mom, so when I got some spending money, I told him I would pay what he was asking. I still think I got an ok deal.

I think it has AU-53 maybe 55 details. The surfaces are dark and a little bit rough which I think will cause it be labeled as environmental damage. You can piggyback on an authorized dealer's submission to either PCGS or NGC or if you would like to send it in yourself, ANACS will be the cheapest option. Not a bad buy for a coin that has a lot of detail remaining.

Hi,

Where is the best place on-line to look up free-of-charge updated Newcomb #s pricing and corresponding photos(of die cracks etc.) for large cents?

Does Newcomb also address other types of US coins?
