I bought $20 of penny rolls from the bank, and found several coins. One roll was all uncirculated gems from the 70's, and it was in the old style wrapper. I also found a 1904 Indian and a 1909-VDB, with a many wheats. Is the roll of uncirculated ones worth anything - they're all before 1980.

I take it its a mix of 70's, not just a single year? Have you searched it for specific coins of value such as a 1970S small date? Maybe someone's dump if its mixed date BU, in which case may have been picked clean. Or possibly someone dumped a roll they came across not knowing the contents. I can usually get a BU roll of mixed dates from the 70's at my LCS for $2 bucks... Knowing full well it's going to be filled with commons.

When you guys throw around the term BU it confuses me a bit. Could someone post a few pics of what you are considering BU coins from the 70s? I think BU coins that old are quite rare but maybe I am being too strict about what qualifies as "BU."

BU = Brilliant Uncirculated. Uncirculated basically equals anything MS60 and up. Brilliant basically equals red with some luster. I'm in a hotel at the moment so I can't post a pic, but maybe someone else can help out. So to answer your question, is a BU coin from the 70's rare... Not really... Nor 60's... Nor 50's... Obtaining sub 1930's in BU is pretty much the breaking point, at least for me, where it begins to cost a bit more to obtain. Commons in that area can cost me $1 to $2 each at my LCS versus $2 roll of BU from 1970's for example. Again, your mileage may vary. This is my local experience.

Actually I can help a little more. Both of these coins would be cosindered BU, while sometimes people mistake only coin on the right as BU.

You and me both at first :) When I first started I quickly learned by paying too much for some BU cents... Expecting the coin on the right and getting the coin on the left :) I guess the best explination is, just like grading, uncirculated is subjective. I Am still fairly new though, so if I missed any major points please feel free to chime in. There are different descriptive terms to BU, such a Gem or Choice which would indicate a BU coin at the higher end of the grading scale (coin on right).

Yes, those coins are BU. They're dates ranging between 1969-1979.
