Hi, The following coin of nero is offered on an auction, a coin of Nero. What do you think, is it genuine or fake? The condition of the coin seems to be super! (I suppose too good to be true?) Thanks, Edited by Dutchgulden 07/18/2013 1:29 pm

Sorry ...... NG
The lettering alone is a red flag
Add in the very cast look of the surface and the 'dopey' look on Nero's face and this is not even a think twice item

I would say its a fake. I think I see a seam between the border and the edge. The details look mushy and the the background surface fields look like they have remnants of casting. Fairly safe to say this is a fake.

It is a very common type of Nero As produced in Lugdunum (Lyon). I have seen some very decent ones on ebay for around $100. High grade $200 and up ! I believe your photo is one of those enigmatic non radiate dupondii. Very attractive piece ! Is it for sale ?

Well that is just 'SILLY' ! I have one similar condition and if I wanted to sell it I would not ask half that ! It is possible too that the owner has no desire what so ever to sell it and simply puts it up for show. Or he got fleeced and is trying to escape his mistake. I have listed some Romans on ebay with no real desire to sell them. I figure if someone did pay me 'Stupid money' I could always use the money to go buy 2 more !

That's too bad, if it was real it would have been a nice coin to have.

It isn't too good to be true a better condition examples of real coins exist and are offered. The style however is too bad to be true. Here are a couple from some fake reports that I have seen in recent years.... Martin

It is interesting that the fakes all fail to capture the 'essence' of Nero's portrait. In fact they quite resemble Domitian to a great extent. Nero usually has a sneer and looks like he is trying to intimidate someone. These all have a 'dopey' happy Mr Niceguy sort of look. They do not capture him artistically.
