A more unusual pickup this time

Yaudheyas-Of-Punjab-Tetradrachm

A tetradrachm from the Yaudheyas of Punjab circa 300AD

The obverse shows the Goddess Lakshmi standing with hand on hip, wearing transparent garment; lotus and nandipana symbol in field.

The reverse is Karttikeya standing facing, holding sceptre with peacock on right. In Brahmi this says'Yaudheya Ganasya Jaya' (translated to Victory to the Yaudheya people)

Well done my friend. I guess I am no longer the only one with one of these. I am really glad others see the beauty in these coins.

Apparently there are quite a few variations of these - with different in field symbology. It's pretty obvious that there is a strong Kushian influence as well. They are very inexpensive (mine was £4) so it's probably possible to get a few varieties for little outlay. This is a very under explored area of numismatics - and if the Indian market takes off the way the Chinese one has .....

It's funny you said that, " if the Indian market takes off" I just made an investment in some Indian coins of the Western Satraps with the new publication by Dr. Alex Fishman. In general my collecting interests have moved eastward, into the unknown, under studied, newly discovered, and cheap. Your coin cost you 4 GBP then I consider it a great deal. I got mine in trade but the purchaser paid a great deal more for this example about $35 or so. I would give 8 GBP for yours, as it is the same yet different than mine.

Yes - I think India and surrounding is a great place to pick up cheap and interesting coins - and is a market to watch. I was lucky in that I picked up a lot of a Dublin dealers inventory (after he passed on) of Eastern material back in the 1990's. Looking back it was such a bargain - hammered rupees for £5 etc., and I still haven't cataloged it all :)
