I'm thrilled with this new purchase, an interestingly restruck Germanicus with his father, Drusus:

A-Partially-Restruck-Germanicus

LYDIA. Sardes. Germanicus, with Drusus (Caesar, 15 BC-AD 19). Ae (Restruck circa AD 28/9). Asinius Pollio, proconsul.
This coin was originally struck with the reverse legend EPI ARXIEREWS ALEXANDROU KLEWNOS SARDIANOU but using an elaborate set of ring shaped countermark dies the obverse and reverse legends were restruck, the reverse indicating the new magistrate.

Obverse Legend : deltaΡΟΥΣΟΣ KAI gammaΕΡMANIKOΣ KAIΣ'ΡΕΣ NEOI ΘEOI ΦΙΛ'deltaΕΛΦOI
Obverse Description : Togate figures of Drusus and Germanicus seated left on curule chairs, one figure holding a lituus
Reverse Legend : gamma'ΙΩ AΣΙΝΝΙΩ ΠΟΛΛΙΩΝI ANΘΥΠ'ΤΩ KOINOΥ AΣΙ'Σ
Reverse Description : KOINOY AΣΙ'Σ in two lines within wreath; legend around
Weight: 15.5 gm
Diameter: 29 mm

RPC 2995

Supposedly there is an article about this coin in the November 1994 issue of The Celator. I'm trying to locate a copy of that article-- no luck finding it online so I'll have to find and buy a copy of that issue. The piece by Thomas McKenna is titled "The case of the curious coin of Caligula: A provincial bronze restruck with legend-only dies".

I didn't realize that Germanicus coins were not issued during his life. Caligula, his son, began minting the first ones.

The posted attribution may not be entirely correct. I'm finding some conflicting information on this coin, such as the date of restrike. If any of you can clarify or add information, I'd appreciate it.

If you're a member of the ANA, call the library and have them photocopy the article for you.

Gitbud & Naumann (Germany) via Pecunem auctions. Picked it up along with that lovely Lucanian Athena.

Didn't even have to pay VAT! Shipping was reasonable and quick. Most of the coins in that auction sold for far more than the estimated prices, which seemed low anyway when I did some comparison shopping prior to bidding. I wonder if that is usually the case with them? Do they lowball the price estimates or was there just exceptional interest in those coins? Some of them sold for ten times the estimated price.

Man, TIF , I am jealous. I just keep coming back and looking at this coin, my only comfort is knowing that in an alternate universe that coin is mine!

I'm really digging it too :) It went for way more than the pre-auction estimate but I still think I got it for a very reasonable price, considering. It's one of the nicest examples I found.

That is an awesome coin! Which kidney did you sell to get this one?

Interesting counterstamp too - it makes the coin so much more interesting. Its like an anti-cartwheel penny.
