New Guy With Unknown China Coin - Coin Community Forum

publius Pillar of the Community United States 807 Posts	Posted 07/31/2013 3:05 pm It's not Chinese at all, but Japanese. The inscription is "Kan-ei Tsu-ho", which might be translated "Circulating treasure of the Kan'ei period", referring to the first issue of this type in 1626, but the same inscription was used for the next 250+ years. Judging by the wave-pattern & border, it appears to be the type listed in the Japanese catalog as #75 under Shin-kaneisen, dated to the sixth year of Meiwa, or 1769. Report this Post to the Staff

It's strange that my grandfather mis-identified it since he lived in Japan for several years after the war. That must be why I couldn't find it under Chinese coins!
