Hello - I'm a new guy with an old Chinese problem. I can't seem to date this because of the bottom symbol and the pattern on the obverse. I would appreciate the help.

It's not Chinese at all, but Japanese.

The inscription is "Kan-ei Tsu-ho", which might be translated "Circulating treasure of the Kan'ei period", referring to the first issue of this type in 1626, but the same inscription was used for the next 250+ years. Judging by the wave-pattern & border, it appears to be the type listed in the Japanese catalog as #75 under Shin-kaneisen, dated to the sixth year of Meiwa, or 1769.

That is awesome - thank you. It's strange that my grandfather mis-identified it since he lived in Japan for several years after the war. That must be why I couldn't find it under Chinese coins! Thanks so much.
- Mike the new guy.
