Hey every one finally got it back from CCCS and as the title says..I had posted pics quite awhile back and many members had negative opinions... Well as I stated before the only 1 known and it is now in a Hard slab....Personally I think it is slightly undergraded.. VG looks better but what ever...So any thoughts on this now.. ? Should I send it to Charlton? what would be a realistic value ?

Would need a really good microscope picture of the 8 in question... all I see is a little coin in a big holder...

I can't believe the grader missed the devil's horned 7!! IMHO it is damage on both 7 and 8.

The resolution of that 8 is not sharp enough for me to form an opinion, see my post above when I state really good. I realize there is a file size limitation on this site. If you have high resolution microscopic photos, then send a PM to Zonad and myself.

I certainly can see the horns on the 8,... and the 7 shows 'something' there,...but the clarity is really not good and the light flair from the bottom is also confusing to me.

Need a good sharp microscope shot with a bit of "depth of field".

Rey to add pics with the 'light top down' or from different directions.

Zonad no die cracks that I can see, there are a few very light scratch marks, but you can clearly see the double striking of the 1 & 7 also.... There is a small mark on the upper left side of the 7 but I think it is only a scratch its is definitely not a horn like is seen in the 8... Also note in the upper 8 you can see where the underlying # blocks it a bit

If this coin went to court, it would lose based on reasonable doubt. There are no other known coins to back up the exsistance of an 8/5, and this coin is so worn , that it "could be" PMD. I don't believe that there is enough "clear" evidence to say that this is a legetimate variety. Only my opinion.

in hand its as clear as daylight..The pic of the date was from a scanner .. I wish I could show how clear it was.. None the less A Pro grader can see it and it is certified so thats enough proof.. Just remember the 1858 8/5 was a first one only one also until another was found... Just like some other coins. always a first and only until others are found right ?
I bet if some well known high profile collector found this and had it graded there would be no doubt in any ones mind...Which is unfortunate..

you have a very good point about there always being a first. What you need to do, is get as much feedback as possible. Put it into a national coin show auction with a high reserve. It would have to pass the owner of the auction's inspection first. Or get it onto a dealers table at one of the big show. The whole point will be to get as much opinion and feedback as possible. The biggest thing you can do for your coin is to find other examples. If it is a true variety, then there must be others out there. Good luck.

tfred, that was the whole purpose of when I posted this long ago before it was certified.. I was asking everyone to search .. I finally sent it to them and I know what I have.. I have sent it - pics to Charlton and also CCN .... It was also listed on ebay for 1,000,000 not in hopes of selling it but for others to search..I was ridiculed and laughed because of the price..Had they have read the listing I stated I dont expect anyone to buy it just search....

My next step is to put it in a major auction with a crazy high reserve and hope for the best.. This will attract error collectors , rare coin collectors and those who look for dimes..

Myself I dont collect errors so its a bonus for me
