Just what do you consider "a crazy high reserve"? Remember, it is not the rarity of an item that matters, it is the demand.

My thought on the crazy high reserve is to not sell it, but to gather feedback only. The problem is that the auction owner probably would not want his auction to be used in that manner. No sale, means no commission. Therefore the input of the auction house is very important. If he doesn't think its a valid 8/5, then you've hit a dead end.

Not to knock Louis, I think he runs a pretty good business and grades accurately, but he tends to be very liberal at attributing non-canon varieties. Much more research will need to be done before this "variety" can potentially be accepted. Only then will there be a demand for it.

Can someone explain how this could even happen... How does a coin 1870 coin end up with a 5 on it?, to me it makes no sense.

I guess the same way an 1858 /1558 10 cent piece existed. I don't know the answer to that one either. I suppose if it happened once, it could happen . Still need more example for confirmation. I'm gonna check mine tonight.

re-punch #1 - Ooops, used a 5 punch not a 8 re-punch #2 - Repunch the 8 like was originally intended I doubt that is absolutely simple to distinguish a backwards 5 that is about 1 millimeter high from an 8.

@ SPP the reserve would be whatever the auction house feels is adequate I guess... As for how it can happen..simple..The 1858 was because of a broken die an the used a 5 under the 8 to fix the 8 or so the book says..So why not again in 1870? maybe the same die was used to punch out some before a new one came in ? and I will say it again..If this coin was from say Beltzberg , or Pittman or any other huge name the coin would simply be accepted..tell me I'm wrong ... Either way guys I will say it again The search is on .. and I truly hope somewhere out there there is another ...

Lighten up, bud. Just a harmless joke. I am nothing short of professional regarding my listings and sales, even when others act unprofessional with me. If you are referring to the instance when you refused to remove my photos of my coin in your ebay listing in order to sell your coin, I was even polite with you then, despite the circumstances. You then posted a thread ( https://goccf.com/t/138001) here in attempts to justify your actions and for sympathy. Just like in that thread, you spew veiled insults and untruths, then take a "holier than thou" attitude. Good luck with your coin. With your attitude, you'll need it. There are politics involved in this industry, especially when it comes to canonizing varieties.

Matt first off I can take a joke like anyone but your use of the uncle and aunt was a bit tasteless giving there are young people on this forum ...As for the other instance I corrected it and appologised for it if you remember.. As for attitude please look in the mirror before criticizing me or any one..I also am very professional with all I do.I made 1 bad judgement call and you go off .. Man you have no idea who I am or what my collection consists of , or how long I have been at it.. Lets just keep to the point dude.. We all have to look for this coin because I'm sure there will be others found... That said man no hard feelings , and let the hunt continue
