awsome, biggest ancient coin I've ever seen! Didnt you feel tempted to keep it?

Only a little bit. I kept the 48mm from Stack's Bowers, from the Professor James Eaton collection. I liked the patina better and it has awesome provenance. I was afraid he'd really want it and because of his generosity I would've felt obligated to let him buy that one. I might've forgotten to tell him about the rockin' provenance . I figured the "I've got the biggest one" factor would please him.

Hey, I never posted better pics of that coin, did I? Let me correct that oversight

EGYPT, Ptolemy II Philadelphus.
285-246 BC
AE, 48 mm, 91.8 gm. (note: elsewhere I said 47.5. Remeasured, it just makes 48mm.)
Obv: laureate head of Zeus Ammon right
Rev: eagle standing left on thunderbolt looking right, wings partly spread, E monogram between eagle's legs
Ref: Sear 7782
ex Professor James Eaton Collection; from Stack's Bowers August 2013 Chicago ANA World's Fair of Money. Professor Eaton acquired this coin in the late 1800's and it stayed in his family until this sale.

Same question regarding attribution-- is it Ptolemy II or Ptolemy III?

Another shot to emphasize the massive size. Compared to a 9 mm Klazomenai pigasus:

Noob, you're never going to forgive me for finding that 15 Shekel, are you?

I've been checking Great Collections for ancients regularly since then and haven't come across anything close to that in terms of a good deal. What few ancients they have are mostly unremarkable and overpriced. And slabbed (shudder). It was just a once in a lifetime thing, I guess

Here's a nice lunker

I-Like-Big-Bronze.--Post-Yours-Here!--Ilbb-Thread

EGYPT, Alexandria. Hadrian, 117-138 AD
Æ Drachm, 35 mm, 24.8 gm
Regnal year 15 (130/1 AD)
Obv: AVT KAI TPAI ADPIA CEB; laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind
Rev: Hadrian standing left, togate, holding sceptre, greeted by Alexandria, clad in elephant's skin headdress, chiton, and peplos, holding two grain ears in her left hand, and kissing Hadrian's extended right hand; L-IE (date) below.
Ref: Emmett 964(15)

This coin commemorates Hadrian's visit to Alexandria in 130 AD.

His beloved companion, Antinoüs, drowned in the Nile on the trip. The circumstances are unclear and some historians suggest it was an intentional sacrifice.

Hadrian mourned the loss of his lover. Antinoüs was deified, a cult began, and the city of Antinopolis was established on the Nile's bank not far from where he drowned.
