I have a bunch of 1970 S nickels that I will be going through and then putting back into circulation. I just have no idea what to look for in these nickels. Are there errors or varieties that I should watch for?
Thingee. There is not a lot going on with the 70-S in mint state, proofs yes but not business strike coins. The hard part with the 70-S is trying to find coins that look good without marks if I were you I would save the coins with the best appearance, and there are some with 5 full steps. Wish I had more for you maybe another member can offer you more.
Errors or varieties to watch for - anything. Everything was discovered at one time or another, just looking for a specific list of stuff is limiting yourself from the possibility of finding something yet unknown.
The surfaces of business strike and proof coins are totally different. If the nickel looks like the ones you spend, it's business strike. If the nickel has deep, polished mirror fields with frosty letters and other devices, it's proof. The difference is obvious in hand.
