I have seen a couple of these coins on ebay. If the Obverse is blank, and there is no picture of the reverse to see, how do you know if it really is an Adams dollar?

I sent the seller a request for more pictures, but haven't heard back yet.

There is no way to prove that it is a Adams Dollar. It's either a Sac, GW, or JA. I can't believe that these people are paying $200 so far for this

I could see paying the price if it was reverse. With the John Adams stamp and blank back.

I agree it is a blank planchet and has a value of 10 to 20.00.

Madmartigan

If it was only blank on one side it would be an altered coin

Blank golden dollar planchets are actually uncommon with values around $100. With that auction at over $200, someone is paying 2x what they should

I emailed the seller and he said the reverse is blank as well, so you have no way of really knowing where it came from.

OK, this post got me curious about the going price of a blank planchet. In my searching, I found that PCGS actually assigns a grade to the planchet. I saw an XF45, MS61, MS62, MS64, etc...

How do you grade a blank planchet, there are no details to evaluate. The only think I can think of is the absence of bag marks.

Oh and for contrast with the ebay auction in OP's post, Littleton sells two planchet sets (1 Golden Dollar, 1 SBA) for $199.

It is just a blank planchet error. The $1 are somewhat rare, worth over a hundred dollars.

a cent blank planchet error is common, with about a buck. (funny thing is they are both worth a hundred times face) so the dollar is undervalued IMO.

Now in the ebay description you put smooth edge and prez dollar error (could be or not, no way to prove not) and there you have the price.

errrrrrrror

It's all in how you advertise your item, right Error? Just put error or something like that and someone will bid up the price. People are just nuts these days on what they will spend money on in anticipation of making a fortune. The lack of knowledge by people will cost them a lot of money in the long run and most of them won't even know about it for years and years. Greed seems to have taken over the coin collecting hobby.

Indeed. I can't believe that sold for $330!
