I have become very fascinated recently by the 8 Reale coin, and I want to get a small type set going, from Carolus III and up.

I know a little about the coin, that it was the premier coin for all trade at the time, is this why there were so many minted in other countries such as Mexico, Bolivia, etc? Are these technically Spanish coins as well?

I would love some info on the coin, or even a point in the right direction. I am a small dealer, and since I started, I have less time to focus on the hobby myself, and thus it's rare for something to really spark my interest like this coin has. Thanks in advance.

The history and information about these coins, has and will, continue to fill volumes of text books and historical papers and articles. Many written by contributors of this forum.

It would be difficult/impossible to give any usable information in a short or even multiple posts. My advise would be to put 8 reales into the site search engine, set aside about 3 days to read, and read....read....read....... there are massive amounts of information , examples and most importantly extensive discussion on types and amounts and history of the many .... many counterfeit that are a part of the history of this storied coin.,

Something quick : the spanish empire was the first to settle in south America, before Portugal and the British came in, and America, Mexico and other countries as we know it were created.
Before Ferdinand VII, the kingdom was united and everything in South America (except Brazil, which belonged to Portugal) was Spanish.
That's during the reign of that king that everything moved quickly, and all countries there took their independence, with their heroes, and royalists fighting independentists / republicans.

That's why I love those coin, they come from Colombus till the independence of south american countries :)

You may want to start your type set concentrating on the 8 reales of just one country or just one Monarch.

Or take one of each king ;)
I collect that way : one of each type / denomination - except some particular cases (Felipe II - one of each mint, and Ferdinand VII, where I go in design sub-types as there are many small differences)

Actually, you can go for the 2 reales which will be cheaper and easier to find - it all depends on your budget and what you like.
I know some who concentrate on half reales :)
4 reales are nice, but scarce (as expensive as 8, sometime more expensive)

Anyway, the best is to just have fun looking for them, documenting them, seeing what was happening when they were made, holding them (and not a plastic coffin :P ) ... depending on what you like :)

Mat, the noteriety of the 8 Reales coin is the point. I will try one of each king, that should keep me busy until spring.

You will find that most threads on the Spanish Colonial 8 Reale coin will be discussing just what type of counterfeit coin it is rather than discussing an authentic coin. But historically they are very interesting and important.

I am very worried about counterfeits. This was why I waited so long to buy a British Trade dollar, and why I am hesitant to buy a US Trade dollar.

Anjohl Just be careful before you spend a lot of money. As pointed out counterfeits are quite common.

READ FIRST and get to know everything you can about the coin first.

Welcome to the series. It has been my favorite since 1960.
