Hello. I bought this 1860-s dime for 4$ (2$ coin + 2$ shipping cost). Dime is nice detailed, but unfortunately Lady Liberty was shot in the head. What do you think about value of this coin? I hope, I did not overpaid:) It is my first coin with hole, usually I did not buy such coins, but I think it was quite good deal for this semi-key dime. Thank you for all answers.

I'm not sure there's any value here. Were it a MS dime, maybe, but a VF dime holed out like this might just be a novelty at best, IMO

There's some value, but a lot less than if it didn't have the hole. In my opinion, I think $4 is a good price for this dime but I am by no means an expert.

Normally I would say it was a good deal but the hole is so big and the coin is so small that I, personally wouldn't even buy it and would value it at $1.

Your coin is essentially worth bullion value in that shape.
A whole silver dime is worth about $1.40 at the moment.
With the hole you probably have more like $1.25 worth of silver.
Anything more than that is overpaying.
UNLESS
At this point in time it's the best you can afford for that date/mm.
Then you did okay (as long as you remember it's really only worth bullion).
Rest in Peace

There are two directions you can take with this coin. Start a holed 7070 collection or just put it on your key chain.

I don't see any value over bullion.

Too bad that's a better date. The coin is probably worth a little more than bullion. I'd buy it for $4 just because of the date and original looking patina. Actually a holed 7070 as dave700x recommended isn't a bad idea assuming you can buy them at a good price point like this.

Don't let them get you down. $4 is a good price for that coin. You would pay more than that for your kids happy meal. And you get to keep the coin! Also look at this; with 140,000 minted and a survival rate of around 3 percent, there are probably no more than 4200 of these in existence. Probably closer to 2500. Yes it's damaged, but it is what it is.Enjoy it!

At some future time, maybe even decades from now, I predict that this will appear on ebay, touted and sold as a slave ornament ...

Seriously, there is always "perceived value" for these Civil War era coins, despite the damage. That often translates to real value for the history buffs who know little about the coin market. As such, I can see this coin selling over and over, again for more than the price paid. Then too, there are collectors who actively seek these holey coins.

I did an entire holed flying eagle/Indian head cent collection just for the fun of it. I was seeing so many of them that I figured I could get it done very cheaply. Never found a holed 1877.

I don't think you paid too much for what you got. It is a very interesting coin.

I personally would hold off on damaged coins and save the $4 to apply towards the cost of an un-damaged specimen. I'd rather have 1 nice 1860 s dime than 20 damaged examples.

I can't tell based on the pic but you should be able to tell if it's a recent hole or not. Seriously, a recent drilled hole will reduce the value much more than a primitive, old one. You can imagine someone during the civil war wearing this around their neck as a good luck piece or just so it doesn't get lost. A recent hole...not so much.

Given the turn of this thread, I can't help but wonder if the TPG's will eventually develop a sticker to warrant original holes .....
