Lovely. On my phone, I see a nice original XF40, but there may be flatness of strike which I'm missing. Will revisit in a couple hours when I'm in front of my monitor.

I'm in that XF40 neighborhood as well. With the weak strike in certain areas, it sure looks like a VF coin.

  Tough coin problem free in any condition much less in the VF-30-EF-40 range. A possible market acceptable cleaning. It is a beauty and would fetch a pretty penny. $6K++. Makes mine look like a dawg. Jealous! |

Even though the details have a VF-sh look to them, I am amazed at how much luster is retained, which should easily push it well into XF territory imho.

On the monitor, I think I may have to call it VF35.
For the record, this is a ridiculous rarity; it's thought that only about 15-16,000 were minted although the precise number is unclear. This would be the unquestioned key to the series were the 1823 not even rarer; from 4676 records in the Heritage archive of Bust Quarter sales, only 98 are dated 1824.
And only 9 of them from 1823....
This is a very significant coin, and it may be the only one you ever see at Coin Community.

I grade this coin at EF40 to EF45. A scarce and desirable coin. When I was looking for one, this is the best I could afford - NGC VG8.   |

Are we sure this coin is genuine? Looking closer at the surfaces, I'm seeing some raised bumps, two directly below the ear, one above the 2 and one below the 4 in date. Another in the center of the shield.
