Surprising this coin has really taken a beating price wise over the past 5 years. From $17K in 2009 to $9K today. The plus coin has only dropped $2800 in the same time. PCGS lists no MS67+ grades at this time in the population reports.
I'm guessing there have been a few more MS67 coins submitted and slabbed in that time, because the market in general has not dropped that much for high end coins. Currently there are 19 coins in MS67RD and 1 in MS68RD with neither grade showing a plus coin graded. I don't have access to my older pop reports right now, but it would be interesting to see how many there were in 2008 as compared to today. (understanding pop reports are to be taken with a grain of slat due to crack outs and resubs).

Why is this RED not an MS68?
To get the coveted MS68RD or a plus designation I think the coin has to be incredible your example is a very, very, very, nice one, but that tiny little tick in front of Lincoln's nose in the field, and on his upper lip, a tiny almost imperceptible discoloration spot between the S and T in "TRUST" and the tick on the N of CENT, on this coin almost precludes it will not get a higher grade nor a plus designation. IMO.
It is an absolute stunning Lincoln, so please don't think I'm down on it, it deserves every bit of a MS67RD grade, I'm just trying to look it over subjectively, since I have no stake in the ownership of it. I would love a coin like this to be in my
Lincoln Cent collection, it is so far better than any Lincolns' I currently own it's off the charts!

....because the price would double or triple with a pop of 1 higher.
Exactly, and PCGS puts their money on their grades, they are really reluctant to go too high on copper coins (even if they no longer pay for color changes) a tiny little speck can turn a MS68 coin into a MS65 coin in a very short time I've had some experience with some
IHC that changed on me in a 2 year period (my own fault as I didn't keep an eye on them, and had moved to a much more humid climate). But it happens.
I often wonder just how many raw high end coins are still out there! My father told me a story of visiting Harry Bass at his office in Fort Worth back in the early 1960's, said Harry had mint bags of MS
Indian Head cents laying around, and I know I've seen old rolls (100's of them) of cents through Halves dating back to the 1920's, (these were unopened bank wrapped rolls), I know they had not been gone through nor touched since I saw them in 1995, (the person they belong to has no interest in doing anything with them, and is not a collector nor do they need the money, they do know there is a great value contained in them), I've got to wonder when they will finally see the light of day? Yes there are still mini hoards of MS rolled coins out there, how many will end up being top end coins is anyones guess, when and if they ever get released I doubt they will impact the market that much, at least not for the top end graded coins.
