Hello. Here is my newest purchase, 1786 New Jersey Maris 18-M. I bought it for 133$ and I am very happy with this coin. Pics aren't too good, but color (at first photo is most similar to real look of coin) is very atractive and surface is nice and clear - unfortunately, with some spots of green corrosion. I don't know how recognize luster in brown coins, but I think this NJ may have some remains. Coin is nice detailed, but somebody was trying to "repair" shield and now there is huge scratch... I hope it did not ruin too much of value. Center of the shield is weak, but I saw at another 18-M examples the same problem (even in high grade). Please grade this coin for me. Thank you.

Nice R1 coin. XF for sure. The green doesn't look too bad. Try an acetone soak and see if that takes care of it. Not sure I follow you on the scratch/repair comment but I don't see it is "killing" the coin.

The price you paid for it... you did extremely well!

Thanks for your opinion, I was on XF40 too. I am afraid to use acetone on this coin, once I have used it on large cent and it doesn't looked good.

Looks like an EF-40 to me.

I have absolutely no expertise or knowledge of these coins ... so adding my comments as general observations of an experienced collector.

The scratch on the reverse shield was likely acquired many years ago ... and in my opinion does not detract from the coin in a very significant way.

Using accepted USA grading standards ... I estimate the coin to be in XF range ... based solely on the remaining devices and without knowledge of the series.

You did something wrong at that time ... perhaps not using pure acetone.

100% pure acetone is an effective and non-invasive way to remove organic material from a coins surface without damage.

Lovely coin ... thanks for sharing it with us!

If it makes you feel any better... I use acetone on almost all of my old coppers to ensure that any harmful contaminants that may add to corrosion are removed. It makes them look better and I know they are safe to store once "conserved" in this manner.
