Quote:Did the 1988 Twenty Cent coin ever circulate? My 14th ed. of McDonald says they are only in mint sets. I'm not sure, but I'm inclined to think so. I vaguely remember seeing a 1988 20c mint roll in an auction (Downies I think) a couple of years ago, so I assume they were made for circulation. There's nothing about 1988 20c pieces being melted down either (at least from what I've seen).

'Mint' or 'uncirculated' sets contain coins that are individually extracted from the coining press, then packaged for collectors. Coins for circulation are ejected from the coining press and drop onto a pile of previously struck coins. They are then weighed and bagged for dispatch to issue banks. They acquire nicks and dents from dropping onto the pile and from abrasion within the bag.
I am not quite so sure however, how coins that come in latter day mint rolls are handled, i.e., individually or in bulk, like coins destined for issued circulation.
