Back in 1960 when I would daily search rolls of coins in my Dad's store, there were always a few rolls of BU Lincoln Cent rolls in the drawer which had been gotten from the bank.
In my case they were invariably 1960-D cents.

I just ignored them because I didn't collect errors, and the only Memorial coin I would have pulled would have been the 60-P small date.

One month, in one of my coin magazines, a dealer advertised 1960-D "Cracked Skull" cents for three bucks a pop. His ad had a close-up image of Lincoln's portrait which showed a die crack all the way across Lincoln's head from front to back about midway between the ear and the top of the head.

"Hmmm!", I thought, "maybe I oughta check summa those BU rolls!".

So, time permitting, I would open a roll or two of the 60-Ds and just quick scan portions of the roll from front to back.

This went on for about a week with no results, and I was about to consider it a lost cause.

One day shorty after, there were six rolls of cents in the drawer and four of them were BU 60-D rolls.

"Well," I thought, "I ain't gonna fill any album holes today!".

So I decided to scan through the 60-Ds.
First roll had none.
Second roll had ELEVEN just like the one in the picture!
JACKPOT!!
Third and fourth rolls had TWENTY in each roll!

"WHOA!" "I'm rich! I'm rich!"

I lovingly manipulated the coins into 2x2 envelopes without touching them, planning what I was gonna do with all the money I would make.

As it turned out...the coins were showing up all over town!

Nobody wanted them!

My dreams of wealth went up in flames!!

And promotions of non-valuable coins and varieties continue today.
Sorry to hear about your adventure.
I used to save BIE cents, today they are virtually worthless.

Had the same thing happen with 60-D (or maybe 61-D) nickels.

Small die chips right over the 9 and the 6 in the date. We called them "bar date" nickels. Lots of them showed up in BU nickel rolls.

I guess the mint didn't consider tiny die chips as grounds for pulling a die.

If only ebay was around back then, you'd be a millionaire!
