Quick question: is CCF planning to attend the ANA 2014 World Fair of Money show this summer? I am asking because I want to know if those working the show will want any stuff to give away to kids and young numismatists.

Fire me a message if so, I have some cool stuff to send down, if Bobby wants it...

Unfortunately we will not be doing the Chicago show, its just way too expensive in Chicago.

We will be doing the FUN show in January though so we will give away anything you send there.

Thanks Roger!

The Chicago area ANA coin show is a very expensive location from a private collector's point of view. In my case driving from central Wisconsin would be about $100 just in gas. Adding insult to injury; the toll ways charge anyone without a prepaid card twice as much in tolls. Parking at the show is a min. of $13 per day. If one needs a hotel room and meals kiss another $150+ goodbye. Doesn't leave much room for coin and medal purchases unless you are a high roller. Don't think that I have ever bought anything at an ANA show that I would have been happy to pay $300 or more for than what I actually paid for it.

I was thinking about going to the World's Fair of Money in Chicago, but as retiredkper pointed out, it can be expensive once you consider travel costs. The thing for me that may be the deciding factor is whether it is going to offer more than one of our local shows would. I know that the cost will be higher for whatever coins I might bring back, but the experience of going to the show may be worth it for me. Does anyone have any comments regarding what you find at a show like this or the FUN show that you don't get at a smaller local show?

Um....unless your local show has 500 dealers, Mints from around the world, top numismatic lectures and classes and a usually astonishing display from the ANA ....then yeah it will offer more than your local show.

How long do you need at a big show like this? Will I be able to get the full experience in one day?

It has always taken me at least one day just to look over the bourse area. I do this looking for tables with my kind of stuff; medals, foreign coins etc. I never even slow down at tables covered with slabs. Take another day for exhibits and presentations. If you are like me figure about half a day worth of time just talking to old friends.

Hold On ....HOLD ON! The CCF Banner will be flying at the Rosemont ANA Money show While I will not be able to have all the kids roll and win, I will be putting up some nice coins for a drawing to any CCF Member that puts there name in the bucket.

CCF "Mom" sent me the banner and it will be out. I will post the table numbers on Monday so stop by and enter. You do not have to stay to win, and I will have a multi winners for both Kids and Older Kids .

I will get with Bobby, and Sue ...Or Sue and Bobby to see if we can arrange a "everyone is a winner" for the Kids.
Rest in Peace

My first show was the 2011 ANA show. I was traveling that week anyway and figured I could route myself through Chicago for no extra out of pocket expense. I figured it was my one chance to see the circus - I took the red eye to Chicago, napped for an hour before the show opened, spent the day and grabbed a 6pm flight home. Total out of pocket was two trips on the El and lunch plus a vacation day.

I really didn't plan to buy anything - and I didn't - I was a numismatist not a collector - and just wanted to look. Blown away doesn't begin to describe the experience. Just the museum exhibits and the world mints were amazing. Did I do the show justice? No way. But it was a blast. I did it again in '13, this time making a few modest purchases.

I will say I've had as much fun at a 20 table show at the local VFW -- I hooked up with a dealer who was willing to let me go through his in-processing boxes.

This year they've cracked down on the personal layovers (both corp. and the airlines - unless it's the only flights, more than 4h isn't a layover anymore, it prices out as separate flight). So, since I would be on the hook for the fare difference anyway, I'm using some leftover hotel points for two nights. Fly in tomorrow (Tuesday) night, 2 days at the show and home Thursday.

SEE YOU IN CHI
