I've been trying to gather a least one roll of dimes for each year and mintmark. Where I'm at I have no trouble in amassing good recent examples from the Philadelphia mint with any example from Denver few and far between. Nevertheless I am trying to continue my efforts. I'll probably never get any return on these coins but have seen diminishing numbers for the years between '65 and the mid-eighties. Some years have really horrible examples.

I'm hoping to collect enough examples of these coins before they go the way of the silver coins.

It's a very interesting project and one that has a great deal to teach.

I tried to do the same thing with Jeffersons back in the early '70's but it was too late.

Another thing that would be hugely interesting is to just set aside a roll each year of circulating coins. It's almost impossible to locate rolls over three years old because attrition on these is near total. On the rare occassion you find an old stash it is usually something that has been added to for many years so it's a mixture of older and new and usually will have coins less than three years old included.

Collectors in the US are sound asleep as far as circulating coins go. They pay no attention to them and assume they are all common. Because they pay no attention many are actually quite scarce or even rare.

Good luck on the project. I'd love to see a report on the 1969 roll when you complete it.

I've been coin roll hunting with dimes and quarters for nearly two months now. The lower mintage dimes and quarters from the late 60s and early 70s aren't showing up in rolls that often. Its even hard to get the later 70s coins. The ones that I do see are at best VF or XF.

I've come to believe that these coins are more scarce than people realize. I think they are definately sleepers.

I totally agree with these sentiments. I pulled complete sets of circulating nickels, dimes and quarters and I'm now buying mint sets to upgrade them all while keeping the circulated examples as backups. Difficult dates to find? Last nickel I found was a 77D, last quarter a 70P... I think the last dime was a 78P? Nice examples from the 70's are definitely getting scarce.

There are going to be some major sleepers in the '80's as well. There were very few people setting aside any clad at all but most stopped in 1984 when mint sets were resumed. To some extent this probably affected nickels and pennies a little as well. Now we take the '80's issues for granted since nice XF's can be found but this isn't going to last. The '84-P quarter, for instance, has very low rims so tends to get marked up very soon and severely in circulation. This coin wasn't saved in rolls and once had a large premium but its low quality ate away at the premium. The few people who care about a nice '84-P quarter can find one fairly easily by just buying three or four 1984 mint sets. Nice coins aren't tough in this set.

A lot of the '80's coins are like this; they're available now but supplies will dry up very quickly when people want to upgrade. While attrition isn't terribly high on the later mint sets like the early ones, mintages were lower. I think people might be surprised someday to find even a few post-'98 dimes are tough, especially non-SF '05 to '10 issues. It's hard to get a feel for how many dimes are being set aside now days but I'm still not seeing rolls of these in the coin shops.

Did you get these in circulation?

I saw Uncs until about 1988 but after that they were very few and far between and most were sliders.

I may have fewer '83-D dimes than any other clad because I started so late in accumulating them.

Bought them a few years back, still haven't looked at most of them just the first few in the roll. Someone had put them back for the future.
